How Do You Prefer Single Cycle Waveforms?

Hey Guys,

I’ve been working on some fun single cycle waveforms for the OctaTrack. I’m a bit curious how you guys use single cycle waveforms on the OT.

Do you prefer to load up single cycle waveforms as individual samples? Or do you like to use them as sample chains?

Low and High cycles to get more then 1 octave range +/-? Or do you do other tricks to get more range?

Or possibly you don’t use single cycle samples at all? You prefer to go hunting/surfing in the OT Audio Editor?

I did my own pack from the Alexkidd’s archive…

Retuned them all to a proper C root note so I can use chromatic mode…

Then I made my own custom sample chains with transposed waveforms, and sliced them so I can use the “start” parameters of the Octatrack to select the octave and play all notes from C0 to C7 using the same audio sample.

I personally don’t use them. I tend to grab samples of whatever and if I want a tone of some type it’s usually pretty easy to set retrig to INF, dial in the RLEN and then play with the envelope settings. That’s what I do anyway.

I don’t understand why the Octatrack is limited to 2 octaves when we can get a range of 4 octaves on the rytm.
They don’t want those products to cannibalize the Monomachime sales ?

Since you would be using the retrig functionality, the sample length parameter has no effect on the sound. The start point does though. Make sure slice is off, RTRG to INF, start with RLEN at about the 9 o’clock position, then slowly move the sample start position and use RLEN to modify the pitch. Once you get familiar with what your actions are doing to the sound, start applying LFOs to the parameters of interest.

Note that I’m not using these tones chromatically, mostly as color or background or just a tone to mix with other stuff.

Some of these really are just design decisions by a group of Elektron engineers; I don’t think Dr. Evil and the CEO of Monsanto are sitting there during these meetings petting their cats and telling Elektron what to do to piss us off! There’s no conspiracy theory…
