I’m coming back to the Octatrack after a bit of time away, I’d had it set up to record only on the selected track using a MIDI controller but I’ve lost the original patterns and I’m having some trouble getting it back to how I had it working.
I use around 6 tracks for looping, each one with a play trig and a record trig on the first step. With my original setup I could hit play, no tracks would record until I moved to the track and used the footswitch to send RecAB/CD commands (C#4/D4) using the footswitches while the pattern was looping, this would arm record on just the selected track, starting record when the pattern started again.
I thought I was using one shot record triggers before. But when I’ve tried to set this up again using one shot record trigs this automatically arms every track whenever I start the Octatrack. I’m sure it wasn’t doing this before.
Am I using the wrong type of record trig or missing something obvious?
DISABLE YES/NO ARM will when checked disable the one shot trig arming and disarming when simply pressing [YES] or [NO]. Note that when this arm/disarm functionality is disabled, the same functionality can be achieved by pressing [FUNC] + [YES] or [FUNC] + [NO]. Read more about one shot trigs in section “12.4.5 ONE SHOT TRIGS” on page 66.
DIS. STOP-STOP ARM will when checked disable one shot trig arming when double pressing [STOP] while the sequencer is stopped.
From the manual, Personalize menu.
I’d say a combination of both options could work.
Thanks. Just checked and I’d already disabled double stop but disabled yes/no now which will avoid accidentally triggering it when working, but the problem’s still there with everything being armed on startup.
If there’s nothing else obvious (and there’s no way to stop it arming all tracks on start, which I’m guessing there isn’t…) then I think it must have always been doing this but I didn’t notice.
I only had guitar/bass going into the Octa and they wouldn’t be playing the first time I hit play (so it must have just recorded silence) but now I have sequenced synths going into it it’s recording on the first loop.
A bit of a pain having to remember to hit Fn-No every time I start it up or have to delete multiple tracks of audio any time I forget. That doesn’t take long, but I’ve spent ages getting things set up so I can quickly grab ideas when inspiration hits and starting sessions with going into menus and trying to find ‘where’s that noise coming from?’ screws up the momentum.
I’m sure I’ll get used to it quick enough, although great if there’s any magic workaround.
Try this:
Set your midi pedal controller to same as OT auto channel (default is 11, but check)
Don’t change trig mode, leave it at default trig mode.
Refer to midi note trig table below:
Set your footswitch controller to have track up/track down (notes 68+69) and whatever record source you want (notes 60-64)
This will allow you to move the track in focus using the pedal, and record. You can also set up mutes etc depending how many footswitches your pedal has.
Edit: Forgot to add, don’t use any record triggers, just do them manually making sure that you set REC1 and REC2 setup menus how you want them.

This will allow him to « distant » record but how to disarm all tracks with one shots at start?
It’s also possible to set precise timing with Trig conditions (if you want to record Track 1 on 2nd bar, Track 2 on 3rd, …) but i think you are more looking for recording ideas on the fly.
The method i use is to not set trig recorders. I set up the Rec1 options to all sources, on Rec2 i set Qrec to pattern length then i manually trigger T1 + the source i wanna record from and it starts recording when the pattern restarts. That’s the most immediate i found to record on the fly without much preparation.
Edit: @darenager has said it

Yeah the advantage of not using 1 shots is that you don’t accidentally record as easily.
But the downside is to have to trigger manually.
Would be nice to have the choice AND avoid possible accidents. Still i don’t get why his one shots are armed if the option is set in the Personalize menu.
I guess it depends on the application, for me the manual recording (using QREC) works best, one shots are great when wanting to record multiple tracks all at the same time though, which I do need sometimes.
Not sure why it isn’t working but most of the time with OT it is usually user error, something over looked.

Aha! Just manual recording with QREC enabled is perfect for me. As is setting all inputs and just using the relevant record trigger.
So many ways to do things with the Octatrack that it’s easy to set up two things when only one’s needed (which I managed to do twice here
)
The added bonus is now I’m free to start using One shots to vary patterns without worrying about accidentally recording. Very glad I asked here (as ever!). Thanks for the help!

After setting those the problem was with one shots arming by default when powering up the OT. Not a major issue but glad I won’t have to worry about that now
