How are MIDI program changes transmitted over separate channel?

Hi,

How are midi program change and bank change transmitted on the octatrack?

Over all channels or is a program change per channel?

The problem is that i route the Octatrack midi out through a 1x4 midi thru box of midi solutions to three synts:

a jomox Mbrane,
a Jomox Mbase and
a Roland Juno-GI

All synths have their own midi track with a separate midi channel.

The problem is when i trigger notes on the OT double notes are played on the same midi channel; both of the Roland and the Jomox

I suspect the Roland juno GI of broadcasting a program on all channels. The Roland GI’s programs and bank’s can’t be selected and it doesn’t matter if the bank and change selections are both set to off.

The Mbrane and Mbase do react on program select messages nor it doesn’t matter which bank is selected.

Please help,

Rudy

By definition, MIDI Program Change and Bank Select messages are sent on an individual MIDI channel.

It is a little difficult to understand, based on your message, what problems you are experiencing.

What MIDI settings do you have on the three synths? Check the manuals of each one if you are unsure about their MIDI capabilities.

A more precise problem description

three synths are connected with a midi in 1x to midi thru out box to the octatrack. The octatrack serves as a master midi controller.

I trigger all three synths with midi control change messages like note on or off. The manuals are checked.

All synths are configured on a separate channel on a separate octatrack track.

When i trigger one track e.g. the jomox Mbase with its own channel. Next i select the “Jomox patch/sound” program with bank set to off. The note on/off command is sent with a few trigs on the Octatrack.

What happens next? The octatrack also triggers a "sound patch of the Roland Juno Gi on the same notes " So two instruments are heard. In my case a Roland piano Juno GI and a kick of Jomox MBase . This at glance a sort of surprising sound effect but wasn’t the intention of the song composition.

Now i have a work around: At the midi controller note menu on the octa track the note lenght is set to zero. Now the piano of the Roland GI is not playing and the Jomox bass kick is. It seems the Jomox Mbase doesn’t processes the note lenght command when two notes are played.

Other problems are that EQ settings of the Jomox Mbase aren’t remembered even if i program the trigger with own EQ settings on the Octatrack.

I will test if it has something to do with the midi throughput.

So as a summary: Octatrack and midi with one synth works. With more i experience bugs or midi translation errors.

Sorted things out on the Octatrack. The problem is fixed!

The cause was in the MIDI sync program change function which is a feature on the octatrack.

Program changes were sent and received on just one channel with the midi sync standard. This caused unwanted triggering of sound patches of different synths.

Ticking send an receive program change boxes to blank, in the midi sync menu solved this problem.

Thanx for reading.
