Home improvements: whatcha working on!

There’s a lot I love about an apartment, but there are a lot of downsides too.

I would love some outdoor space of my own to enjoy. If I want to sit outside I have to go to a park. If I want to sit outside with a beer, I have to go to a bar with outdoor seating. And the lack of space can be very limiting. And of course, trying to control sound is a real challenge. I won’t own a drumset anytime soon. I also don’t have anywhere to do things like woodworking or spraypainting.

When I retire, I’d like to leave the city and buy or rent a home with a basement and a garage. Give myself a dedicated music space and a space to build some things.

Yeah, that’s a whole heap of things I would miss as well if I lived in an apartment.

I remember hearing an older colleague talking about downsizing to an apartment when he retired and not having to worry about a garden to maintain and having more free time. I’ve thought about it a lot since.

Sounds like your ambition, and probably a lot of others, is to go the opposite way. Horses for courses.

That’s the problem with having too many hobbies to enjoy, it can sometimes feel like a lack of progress on all of them. Garden maintenance definitely gets in the way of other things for me, but it keeps me fit and I really enjoy a lot of the mindless and low impact repetitive tasks like mowing, raking etc. I prefer it to gym equipment anyway.

I got new carpet and new flooring recently. Next thing I want to do is paint the living room

ya having a home with a private pool and hot tub is great to drink wine or beer in summer.

I am currently installing wooden herringbone flooring at home. You can save a lot of money doing it yourself but you will lose a bit of sanity

I still see people suggesting OT to beginners. This feels a bit like that but I love herringbone flooring so I see why you’re excited.

Been on loads of jobs round the house this year, still got a fair bit to do. Floors and tiling was done by tradesmen, everything else was done by me.

Finally got the roofers in to start fixing the leaks in my bastard roof.

Here’s the bodgefest before they started…

And here’s the end result…

Had some biblical rain last week and so far so good…

Got about 15 new doors to hang over the winter, then Spring will be for converting the garage into my wife’s office (was gonna be my studio, but collapsing sewerage pipes under the garage forced a change of plans).

Nobody is going to mention the cheetah print carpet and pink railings?

My wife would lose it if she saw this. She already got the glitter epoxy garage floor she dreamed of…

I’ve been tasked with converting two of our doors into double doors. Will be an interesting learning experience, I’ve never done it before.

Including the skylight? There’s a joke about British weather in there somewhere which the blue sky in the photo is undermining.

Given the carpet is leopard print and the bannister is orange, probably not.

It’s been fucking me for 11 years.

Not this summer there ain’t.

Although brand new EPDM rubber smells fucking strong at 38°C.
