Hiphop BeatBattle #43 - Voting and Feedback

Whatsup gang?

It’s amazing all of you guys made a full beattape this time, I can’t wait to start listening!

Here’s a playlist with all tracks in random order:

beattape 7 - Da Science got copyright claimed and removed from the playlist, its here as a youtube video on my personal channel to avoid giving away who did it, please don’t miss it!

Voting

  • You can vote if you submitted a beattape to the battle. If you didn’t, all feedback is very welcome but won’t count for the results.
  • Please give all tapes submitted a spin! They all took time, love and effort to make, so they deserve some attention.
  • This time, we will have two winners/things to vote for:
  • There will be a winner for best overall beattape, and a winner for best individual beat.
  • Please vote by posting your top 3 for both categories. For best individual beat, it doesnt matter which individual beat within the tape it is, you just name the tape name of the beat you like best. This means someone can win this by receiving votes for different individual beats within his/her tape.
    1st: 3 pts
    2nd: 2 pts
    3rd: 1 pt
  • Giving some constructive feedback on the tracks is highly encouraged!
  • 1 tape (Beattape 4) surpasses the 5 minute mark. The author and I agreed that the fairest thing to do is to ask all of you to take this into account when voting to a degree that you yourself deem fair. It’s the same beat that keeps playing, but removing this meant cutting the dialogue.

I Can’t believe we all used the same sample again!

Nah not really

Ive skipped through them all and there’s some really great stuff here, got to give them all a proper play from start to finish though.
Nice one everyone and thanks for setting it up @sleepyhead

Yeah, thanks @Sleepyhead for the setup! Feels like we could do at least 10 more Madlib beat battles based of the catalog he sampled. Went into a rabbit hole digging through the records.

Great entries overall. I enjoyed listening to them all and appreciated the craftsmanship everyone put into making the beats and mixtapes. I’ve been refreshing the original thread daily waiting for this to be released. Really hard to decide from the massive amount of beats and had a hard time deciding the order of the top 3 for each category but here are my favourites:

Beat Battle

  1. Beattape 18 - 3rd beat at 2:18 with that MS-20 res filter panning is crazy with those vocals on top. Super catchy with those vocals.
  2. Beattape 5 - Banging beats all of them. Well crafted as well. Got a bit of Dilla vibe with the bass used on some of them.
  3. Beattape 9 - 1st and last beat are bangin. Love the LA vibe they project.

Mixtape battle

  1. Beattape 5 - Nice transition in-between the banging beats. Well-crafted mixtape overall. Good vibes.
  2. Beattape 3 - Tightly crafted mixtape with some great beats and well selected sounds.
  3. Beattape 2 - Nice and crazy intro, beats and atmos with shifting vibes towards the weird and twisted side ala Madlib.

Honorable mention to mixtapes:
Beattape 16 - Smooth vibes and beats.
Beattape 11 for derailing quickly into full experimental hiphop ala Sun Ra free jazz.

Feedback

Beattape 1
The intro felt a bit too dark with the droney synth and trappy hihat pattern for a Madlib vibe. Liked the sound and weird beat from 1:55 onwards which felt more on topic. Maybe a bit too repetitive end.

Beattape 4
Fun to listen to but maybe too close to source. Will do better next time.

Beattape 6
Like the sound of the first beat but it unfortunately becomes too repetitive to listen to for that long. Nice sound on the second beat but the bass notes have no connection to the melody which feels a bit off. Last beat had great energy, craziness and fun.

Beattape 7
Nice vibes but maybe a bit too much reverb on the intro which makes everything feel a bit distant. Second beat feels super grimey with that kick, snare and dusty background and the clarinette. The rest of the beat are nice but had more of an east coast/NY vibe to me besides the beat that starting 2:53.

Beattape 8
Nice overall but have some conflicting beats and melodies at the end.

Beattape 10
Chill tape. Nice vocal sample in the intro. String in the intro beat feels a bit long and repetitive. Nice beats and transitions onwards.

Beattape 12
Love the energy and Brazilian vibe in the intro beat a some of the other beats mixed with everything else.

Beattape 13
Love the first reggae beat. Would have loved to hear a full reggae mixtape in this style. Some wild and crazy beats that felt fresh. Could have gone crazier on the madlib lyrics to match the beat.

Beattape 14
Nice Madlib vibes on the first beat and Jaylib vibes on the second.

Beattape 15
Nice intro beat until 0:43. Becomes a bit too repetitive after that. Liked the 2:30 beat but unfortunately becomes too repetitive for my taste.

Beattape 17
Nice theme, intro and beats and shift into a dragging darkness.

Beattape 18
Weird and nice. The delay/reverb voices in the beginning take too much attention and stand out too much from the beat which makes it hard to listen to the beats. First beat could have been louder as well. Feels more like a copyright protection unfortunately.

Beattape 19
Too much caffeine for my taste.

@Sleepyhead can you upload the playlist on something like swisstransfert to download it and listen local. I’m currently listening at work, I have dirty hand and soundcloud ads ruin everything. I have to stop / reload playlist every time. My phone become so dirty and it’s so annoying to do that at each beat.

If everyone is ok with that I can add all tracks to a google drive and share it here?

I’m ok with that, if it helps anyone access it easier.

Also, wouldn’t mind a download copy for myself just to keep and listen to.

Im actually working on track critique over the weekend.

I feel like im A&R for Geffen records now listening to everyone’s submissions

Fine with me!

I have to do a quick-vote because I am leaving on a trip tomorrow and won’t be able to listen the coming week. I’ll hopefully be able to add some notes later.

For now, let me just say I am again thrilled by the overall quality of these submissions. Well done everybody!
