Hiphop BeatBattle #43: The Madlib Edition

@Sleepside and me welcome y’all to the 43rd edition of the hiphop beat battles, an ode to one of the greatest, most original and most productive beatmakers in hiphop: Madlib! (Also known by aliases like Quasimoto, the Beat Konducta, Yesterdays New Quintet etc.).

Madlib produced some of the most revered albums of the last decades, but also released a LOT of beattapes/instrumental albums. In that spirit, for this battle the mission is to make a very short beattape instead of a single beat.

Rules:

  • Make a miniature beattape of max 5 minutes, containing between 2 and 5 individual beats. The goal is to make it a complete journey, so focus on things like intro/outro, having an overall sound/theme and the way tracks move into eachother. You have to send me a single audio file of max 5 minutes containing your entire miniature beattape.
  • Instead of the normal voting rules, every participant has just 2 votes: one for the best overall beattape, and one for the best individual beat. You can give both of your votes to the same person if you want, but in the end, there will be two winners, one for best overall tape, and one for best individual beat.
  • In true Madlib fashion, you have to pick a theme for your beattape, which should come back in the title of your tape, but also in vocal snippets (see below) referencing your theme. Be creative!
  • The battle is madlib inspired, but that doesnt mean you have to sound like madlib. Be as original as possible! A trap or Disco style beattape is very much welcome.
  • You can join the battle by sharing your favorite madlib produced track in this thread.
  • Submit your beattape by sending it to me before feb 15.
  • You can only use the samples listed below, no other samples, sounds, instruments, acapella’s or whatever are allowed!

Samples:

  • You can use the samplepack Sleepside and me made especially for this battle! (Sleepside & Sleepyhead’s Dreampack)
  • You can use any original sample (including drumbreaks) that was ever used by madlib or one of his alter ego’s. (Whosampled). Mind you, this is a LOT! Try to use them in a new and original way. You can use the original song, you don’t have to sample the madlib track.
  • You can use any madlib acapella/vocal snippet available.
  • You can use any non musical soundbites from cartoons, movies, comedy, interviews, radio shows etc.

Hope you guys like these rules, good luck!

I’ll start it off with one of my favorite beats of the first Quasimoto album:

Oh wow, this looks like a fun one. I haven’t had a load of time lately, but if I can make something I will. This is definitely my kind of battle!

@Sleepynumb might like this as well, sounds like a good one for some SP-303.

https://youtu.be/Y52M28WQu2s?si=XMiaxfQZcxNG-5Ji confirming I am entering the beat battle and conforming to said rules, and by posting the first madlib song that popped up on youtube search.

I think he is interesting, and I remember lots of hippy type guys and skater type guys being into him when I was much younger.

A bit disappointed as this type of music is not my favorite, and do I understand correctly that I am not allowed to use my digitone? and I have to only use this guys music?

The battle is samplebased, the idea is that you make new music out of the samples provided.

You dont have to use (or like) any of madlibs music, you can pick things to sample from the 100’s of songs he ever sampled in some way. You dont have to sound like him in any way, feel free to make any style of music you like. The more original the better!

But no, I guess you can’t use any synths for this one, so no digitone! Samples only.

okay, sounds good, this should be a nice exercise. The best part is that we are making mini mixtape, i think that part is the funnest part

Great idea @Sleepyhead & @sleepside !

This is the album I first remember Madlib from and this was the track I used to get down to

What’s ironic is that track has no samples except for the drums. It’s Madlib and JDilla playing synths!

RIP JDilla, coming up on 20 years since we lost him

im a bit of a scrub because ive always liked madlib, especially quasimoto, but i very rarely actively listened to his stuff. gotta make a change!

Was gonna go for a deep cut, but not gonna lie, I think Madvillany and Piñata are his best work. It hard to choose from these albums and I couldn’t choose one album over the other.

Well now that Meat Grinder’s already represented, let me post another of my favorites

It’s grand, it sets a real sense of place, and it doesn’t have to stop grooving to do it

Also, here are some notes I took on Meat Grinder when I was studying Madlib's style

Very cool mission brief!

I’ll definitely try to jump on this… also, it’s a great opportunity to familiarize myself with Madlib, as I am embarrassingly unfamiliar with his work.

Happy beat(tape) making y’all!
