Hi,
allow me to set this straight: I was not involved in the set of rules of this battle. I was involved in the choice of dub reggae style and I asked Sleepyhead if he knew Linton Kwesi Johnson.
After that I had to stop being part of hosting this battle.
Cheers.
Curious to listen to the beats.

Thanks for helping me out in the beginning man, hope you’re back for the next one! Also thanks for introducing Linton Kwesi Johnson to me, really happy I got to know his music.

Oh man I’m so glad I don’t have to judge this because they’re all so dope! Everyone came correct!

Yeah fantastic work everyone! I’m gonna listen to these for a few days to try and decide but it’s gonna be super tough as usual! Special shout to @surfacescan for toasting on the mic at the beginning there :fire:

Just bought a pair of studio monitors on Boxing day. Sitting down listening to this playlist with my chair in the middle of the room with a big grin on.

Making this music has been one of the best ways to bring in the new year.

Thanks for the battle @Sleepyhead and @electricthing and everyone for getting into a thing.

My favorite thing so far is we got a full length @Doug track!

If anyone’s wondering what my “Ha!” is all about, my first mix for this challenge caught a copyright strike and SC wouldn’t accept it.

So I sent sleepy a different take with an intro that uses less of the original drum part.

I couldn’t decide which take I liked better, so I appreciate SoundCloud offering to decide for me.

Congrats all, this is a great edition!
I think in the previous thread someone mentioned this should be its own genre…
I’d be up for making another one with the same instructions, what a fun challenge!

@KingDuppy its weird how the copyright machines are triggered by some things and not by others right? Seems totally random sometimes. Glad this one is in the playlist now!

@flipinfantile completely agree! I really love the live mixing aspect of this genre so much that I plan to use dub techniques in more of my future tracks. Maybe we should call it Dubhop :joy:.

My first submission used a lot more of Latifah & KayGee’s drums in the intro, which I moved to the chorus in the new take—so I wonder if SC only listens to the first 30-60 seconds or so of a given track and then calls it a day. Or maybe it’s because that section is much shorter in the new take.

Nicely done everyone you guys absolutely smashed it, really enjoyed every one of the submissions and hope to take part again soon when I get a new laptop.

Yeah, I don’t know how anything works. I’ve only been flagged twice in all the years I’ve been uploading stuff. One time, Instagram insisted that a track I put up was actually a track from a Japanese rock group, which was strange because 100 percent of that song was sounds that I synthesized. There weren’t even presets. And the other time was Youtube correctly identifying my “Christmastime is Here” cover and telling me that it was perfectly cool that I uploaded it.

That’s my favorite thing too. I’ve been a lot more productive in the last few weeks. I’ll have more to share later on, including a half finished “Luchini” remix after everyone’s voted.

Enjoyed the fresh and original beats here.
Pleasantly surprised how well Linton Kwesi Johnson parts worked in them.
Cool Battle, Sleepyhead.

Track 1: this feels like it could have come off a label compilation album. the bass line is groovy and the turnaround swell is hard. the zoom zoom zoom chorus feels so right too.

Track 2: i love hearing biggie (edit: im a goon, Tupac*) over softer and happy sounds. like the dub chords and the use of sirens. fun snare work in here too.

Track 3: this is another one that i wouldnt be surprised to find on an old hiphop tape. ive never listened to much queen latifah so this was a great way to get me interested. the beat supports the vocals super well, both compliment each other just right. laid back tune for sure

Track 4: i started grinning immediately when this song started. love the bass growl going into the verse. the breaks in the back half and the scratching are super fun.

Track 5: I don’t have much experience listening to dub in general but this one feels like the most effective crossover between dub and hip hop. perfect acapella for this track, they feel made for each other. love the swing on the drums too.

Track 6: its me! im not super thrilled with this track. working with acapellas is still a new area for me so this feels less like a remix of party and bullshit and more like i just sampled it for vocal drops. but i enjoyed the challenge, i used my 404 to do the live mixing so i only could record two layers at a time and still have control over the volumes. glad i went through with it tho, fun experience.

Track 7: love the stoney vibe here. i like the phaser use throughout, the drums sound real live and drive the track along. the atmospheric parts with less melodic content are nice and trippy too

Track 8: im really digging the organ sounding sample, provides a cozy bed for the rest of the tune to wrap itself in. another instance of a perfect acapella and beat combo. really enjoy the dubby chords in the chorus type sections.

Track 9: this is so incredibly fun. love the beatboxing, love the mouth siren, great combo of beat and acapella. love the shout out, just top tier fun all around.
