The winner gets the honor (and responsibility ) of hosting Hip Hop Beat Battle #41.
1st place for me is Beat #1 for sure, holy hell whoever did this one went all out. Sounds like a Rainforest-era Paul Hardcastle and QDIII collab in the best way possible.
2nd place goes to Beat #2, reminds me of the old SP-Forum flips you’d hear around 2014 and I got the biggest soft spot in the world for super compressed R&B jams.
And last but def not least, imma give 3rd to Beat #4. I like the melancholy, industrial trip-hop style it’s going for. All the reversed samples and the the breaks chugging along in the foreground reminds me a lot of Pogo’s old broken beat jams.
Shoutouts to everyone who sent in a beat, you guys killed this shit through and through!!
1st #7: This is easily the best beat to my ears. Banging drums and great sample usage. It really sounds like an old-skool track in the best way possible. Certain flavors of Dilla even.
2nd #1: I know I just said old-skool, but this is old-skool in a different way that is really fun and groovy. I’d love to hear someone put bars on this. The bassline is very catchy too.
3rd #9: This one grew on me as I listened to it. There’s a nice groove and a good balance between the sample’s vocals and the rap verse. I especially like the last third of the song.
This was a fun selection overall - great job guys!
The thing about this battle that has really hit me is how expressive people are with their instrumentation. I have loved the build ups, the solos, the layered melodies, the harmonies and all the different instruments used. Here are the three (with honourable mentions) I’d like to put my votes for:
Beat #1. Straight out the gates, I loved how this track used an 808 kit, beautifully phrased vocals “I’m back in a NY groove” and just pieced all the instruments together.
Beat #2. Sometimes when I listen to a track I completely lose track of how long it is because I’m in the moment, instead of wondering “I wont what will happen next”. This spanish speaking track did this for me. Even had that Digital Underground bounce Nice.
Beat #9. Just something about how this dreamy throwback jam takes LL’s song into new places. Thank you.
Honourable mentions to so many more beats - I wish I could pick more. Especially loved #6, 7 and 8.
Overall - I loved the theme and loved how we all rose to the occasion. Thank you
After tallying the votes (including mine), here’s the reveal, finally!
1st place: Beat #2@PineappleDave with 18 points Muchas felicidades maestro! and well-deserved! You’ve officially earned the honor of hosting Hip Hop Beat Battle #41.
This was a great selection! Echoing @surfacescan, i loved the distinctive personalities and musical expressivity in each and every one of the tracks this time!
Huge thanks to everyone who participated, listened, voted, or just helped keep the spirit alive (special shoutout to @natehorn).
Looking forward to what @PineappleDave cooks up for Battle #41!
Congrats to everyone and especially @PineappleDave it really was a great track and my number one pick.
Really delighted to have come second with track 1 I wasn’t going to enter until a couple of days before the deadline when I saw “New York Groove”
It was a big song for me when I was a kid as I was a huge Kiss fan and Ace was the reason I learned to play the guitar which is what got me into music in the first place.
I guess that enthusiasm must have rubbed off on the track as it has a certain joy I think.
It’s very simple, mostly just samples from New York Groove + one Chaka ad lib into Serato hosted in Bitwig. The drums are the Bitwig built in 808 which I think sounds great and all the synths are Diva.
Congrats to number 1 and 2, well deserved. Honored to be 3rd. Thanks for the positive feedback.
Congrats to all for finishing a beat and participating.
I resurrected a Chaka Khan Tight Fit beat I made last year on the SP 404 mk2. CK samples and some synths.
Arranged and mixed in Live 12.
I found LL COOL J’s - Hey Lover ft. Boyz II Men for the rap, stem separated the vocals.
Funny thing is that when cutting two rap parts I dragged the rest of the audio further up the timeline to get it out of the way.
When that part played I was amazed that the chorus (hey lover, hey lover) fit very good with my beat, even same key.
So the best part was not planned. Love it when that happens.
Thanks @flipinfantile for this battle. Great work.
I really didn’t go into this with the expectation of winning . Thank you everyone for the kind words, and congrats to @monquixote and @electricthing on second and third place respectively. Thanks to @flipinfantile for hosting this battle!
In the spirit of bringing this series back to life, it was really fun to focus on a track and push it out to y’all. My first battle was Battle #4, and its spirit of fun, experimentation, and friendly competition is still alive and well today. Great job everyone, and thanks for participating! Music is a shared experience, so thank you for being willing to share yours with us.
As far as the track goes, it was one sitting around in my Ableton projects unfinished (like most of my beats). I already had the 4 count intro and the first two sequences, but I had to go in and flesh it out with more sequences, better bass programming, and a few fun FX sounds. Elements-wise, the song is just 5 tracks. It definitely turned out better than I thought, and I like how it sounds.
But for the next one…wait and see I guess? I’ll keep you all posted.
This was such a fun battle, great entries all around. Beat 3 was probably my favorite, but it’s hard to pick just one.
I didn’t get my beat done in time, but figured I’d share it anyway. Not sure if it ended up so much a resurrection song than a song against death. But here it is in time for spooky season.
