Really cool @Sleepyhead - I didn’t know that about your samples in these battles. Was there a Dutch element in your dub offering? Maybe it was you playing those sweet chords.
Haha well I didnt use any samples there so I guess my own playing was the Dutch element like you said.
Throughout these battles its been really cool to hear what other people cook up with the weird Dutch stuff I’ve been sharing. I actually remember you using the Piccolo & Saxo sample/snippets in the video you made for the tribe battle some years ago. That video was probably the single most impressive thing ever produced for one of these battles by the way.
I am humbled bro, thank you, this means alot coming from you (you won that battle if I recall)
That beat helped me learn my Digitakt and my submission was pure fun - I somehow knew I wanted to make a video to go alongside it after discovering that this Elektronauts Tribe uses youtube videos as sample sources. It helps that the Scenario video is probably the best Hip Hop music video ever. I also had this idea I would make a video for every Beat battle we do… yeah not so much…
Anyways, not sure how well the video stands up to time so I’ve reposted here just in case anyone wants to take a break from New Orleans to have a watch/listen. When of the things I loved most in this was recrafting a new chorus out of scratches "Who’s that?! Tribe y’all! Ripping up the sound!" And of course the Busta verse…
I’ve been digging deep into the drummers from New Orleans as I’ve been jamming along on my kit to the tunes you guys have been posting. Here are some of my findings as I’ve been trying to understand how to play these grooves.
a couple drummers demonstrating Second Line drumming and explaining the “Big 4” as the foundation for all drum set grooves
Then this demo from Peter Erskine (of Weather Report) sitting in the New Orleans pocket with his groove. He talks about how he uses the snare to play a melody.
Finally Zigaboo Modeliste explaining how much he could express his personality with his “double back beat” and “hihat assault” on Cissy Strut which @Doug posted - he also drops some deep life knowledge in there interspersed with pure drum break samples
Not sure how, but the mission is to transfer bring these grooves into my drum programming on the Digitakt
