New Orleans (NOLA) is a city with a musical history that grows from its deep blend of cultures, food and fanfare. Over the course of the city’s 300 years of history, it has been helped birth some incredible musical styles. In addition to being where Jazz started, New Orleans music includes:
- New Orleans Funk
- New Orleans Piano
- Dixieland jazz
- Ragtime
- New Orleans Rhythm and Blues
- Marching Bands
- Mardi Gras Indian Chants
- New Orleans Blues
- Zydeco (African American influence) and Cajun Music (French influence)
- New Orleans Gospel (see Mahalia Jackson!)
- Bounce Music
People say that in New Orleans there is a freedom expressed in the city like no other. Perhaps it has something to do with Free people of African descent first appearing in the city as early as 1722 - only four years after New Orleans was founded as a city. There is a constant expression of freedom and revelling in the streets which is deeply connected to a tradition called the “Second line” where marching musicians perform while parading for funerals, weddings and other celebrations - check out this article about that.
In terms of Hip Hop, New Orleans is home to some great rappers + producers including: Lil Wayne, Curren$y, Jay Electronica, Juvenile, Master P, Frank Ocean and the Queen of Bounce Big Freedia.
