Hi Live Loopers, please help me

Hi,

what I want in a Live situation:
Have some loops played on the OT, jam to it with my Prophet 08 (thru) and when I like it, rec. and loop it (rec. buffer of flex, 3 of them : 1 for bass, 1 for lines, one for pads). when I want to overwrite one, press rec again and play something else.

rec. settings are to record the thru track, not the AB input (1. to also capture the effects of the thru and 2. like this I always have the same volume; with rec. AB I always get volume problems)
I use quantized manual sampling QREC 16. Source AB & CD off, source 3: track 4 (=thru).

my problem: every time I want to record something new, and replace a recorded loop with a new one, the old one KEEPS PLAYING 1 more time, while I am recording the new. for example: I recorded a bassline and want to change it. While I´m recording the new one the old one also plays (=shit).
Then, from the next cycle on I only hear the new one, which is fine.

The STRANGE thing is: when I do the same with recording AB directly (and not source 3), it works: while recording the new, the old one already stops. And now, REALLY STRANGE: If, in the rec, menu, I also switch to source3 in addition, but keep doing everything the same (rec. AB). it again doesn´t work.

So just the fact that source 3 is “on” changes it to the worse (means that the old loop keeps playing while I´m recording the new one) even if I don´t sample from source 3. ???!!! As said before, I´d prefer to sample with thru.

Any ideas?
Or workarounds?

my thoughts: something a bit like this, i think by invoking the thru you are accessing that buffer just ahead of the record head, so the buffer play and record heads are close, but the erasing is the wrong side for you when a thru is used - unlike with direct - where the buffer/rec works as you prefer, i’d probably prefer this way too

my solution: just to show it’s buffer related - micro-time nudge the play trig so it’s 1/384th late - that way the play head is playing the actual recorded part and not the older buffer

it works as you desire, i know this is far from ideal, but it counts as a workaround for pads no bother and for some may be enough

i’d like to hear of better workarounds too as this is a technique i’d use

i’m fairly sure you shouldn’t think of this as being a bug but more a consequence of the processing of audio and an unwelcome timing bi-product, that’s not to say it couldn’t be worked on by Elektron if they wanted to

I know it was mentioned elsewhere, I started to use Cue for the record input. I select the Thru with the Cue (function + cue) so I can see what input I will record without going into the record menu.

I also set “armible” record trigs in the record page (function + step). I put these every 1, 5, 9, 13, etc. I can then press the Track number and Yes for that track to start recording. I also set the record length to the pattern length. Once the first record trig is hit, it will record for the length set in record. The other trigs won’t re-trig recording.

I’m pretty sure this starts recording right away and the previous sound stops.

I usually have several record tracks set up like this. But I’ll fade in the new recordings, sometimes resetting the slices since I’ve changed the tempo. It also allows me to cue the new recording.

I have also done the way avantronica suggests. I was able to do some real time mic manipulations. I pitched down my friend’s voice as he spoke into a mic. I had a difficult time reproducing this a second time, but I could have been too “drunk”.

those suggestions didn’t work out for me, in light of those ideas i think it’s probably better to nudge a recording One shot 1/384th early, that way you can experiment more freely with play trigs - it’s not as neat a combo to get to (Track+Yes) but it’s another workaround

Thanks for your help,

I think I´ll try avantronica´s way, because I really do prefer quantized manual sampling. Our live sets (me and live drums) have lots of improvisations, so being spontaneous is important, and I prefer to hit track&rec compared to recorder trigs (which I may mistakenly arm when pushing yes).

In the meantime, I found out, that with a Pickup Machine it also works.
You just have to stop the pickup track (with REC CD; fortunately not the Sequencer), then you can again do quantized manual rec. (with QREC). It works, you just hear what you are sampling. So the workflow to change for example a live sampled baseline with pickup machine would be:

REC. CD (to change from overdub to play mode, can be done right after sampling and stay in this mode)
REC CD again (to stop the pickup track)
REC AB (to start sampling on the next 1 with QREC 16)

that´s not perfect. but ok, although would prefer to sample with a flex machine, because I can play around with my sampled keyboard playing much more afterwards.

a couple of points

the ‘easy’ just Yes arming of track recs is something i prefer to turn off - so it takes a deliberate Track +Yes - setting in personalize section

the quantizing is potentially the same with the other method if you put the one shot trigs in the same positions (ie 1, 17, etc)

so instead of Track + Src3 it is Track + Yes to arm the one shot recorder trigs

pickup machines obviously tend to overdub or if you hit the wrong button, which i do, erase - it’s slicker but more precarious, perfect if you are sure what’s going on in the relevant icon, not clear enough to me

you´re right, the lilliput-symbols besides the P of the Pickup-Machines are shitty in a live situation.
But maybe we could do it like this:

after every sampling hit REC CD -> on the next 1 (QREC=16 also effects this) it will change into play mode, all easy, keep jamming.
now, 2 possibilities:

to overdub (if overdub is set), REC AB -> recording starts on the next one (if QREC=16), after overdubbing again, like always, REC CD to enter playmode again (Basically always hit REC CD after sampling)

or:
to stop playback: REC CD, then either restart playing with REC CD or start sampling a new loop with REC AB, again with QREC.

and all without looking at the display, should work after a few times.

I tried the thing with 1/384 late, but the result is a strange chorus/flanging effect, because the same is played 2 times with with 1/384 in between.
you solved that?
anyway, i think i´ll stick to the pickup way, once you´ve been used to the play/overdub settings it´s quite easy. and: by quantized stopping and playing you have an easy way of “muting” this track without “function” → one-handed muting!!!
greetings

^ the fix i thought i described did not result in an overlap/staggering or buffers, it definitely resulted in one passage being heard at a time, whether recording or hearing - it’s far from ideal anyway and the pickup route is good enough !
