So I have the following boxes that I have been learning individually but now figured it would be a good time to start experimenting with connecting the beasts.
I have the Octatrack mkII, Digitakt, Digitone and Analog Heat mkII.
Would love to get some input on the wisest way of utilising and connections to get the most out of the boxes. I also have an OP1 that would be fun to add to the mix.
There are many ways to connect the units, and the best way depends on what you want to use each instrument for.
Do you have any other audio equipment, such as a mixer or an audio interface for a computer?
For MIDI connections, you might like to make the OT the MIDI clock source for your system, since its Arranger mode can make up for the lack of a song mode on the DT and DN.
Whenever I see one of these threads, the answer is almost always “a mixer.” I have a Mackie 1202 and it makes hooking stuff like this together so easy and flexible. Plus that Mackie is pretty cheap.
Edit: just re-read my answer and it seems a bit harsh. What I mean is that a mixer is a great and cheap problem solver for many setups. You might look into one!
1202 is great for this! I concur! Then you can use the alt outputs thing to grab any device in the Octatrack. Use the aux channels to feed either the DT or DN inputs…. They really should make a 1202USB.
No problem I completely get the mixer part of things. I do have a mixer (which was not stated in the post) but I want to downscale as much as possible and therefore was hoping to use the OT as mixer.
Lately I have been using the DT as the last piece, to make use of the compressor side chain. With the stereo inputs + the volume settings staying constant throughout the Kits, the duo DT+AH is becoming very interesting processing duo!
I would thus setup your machines this way:
OP-1 > OT AB In
DN > OT CD In
OT > DT > AH
All good suggestions so far. The one thing that’s missing in this thread is to have the OTs cue output going to the AH and back again to one of the OTs stereo input channels. Resampling through the AH is about 90% of what I did back when I had both machines.
