So reverb screwed me and won’t give me a refund on a slightly jacked up OT. They disclosed the button issues but did not mention the OS instability and strange crashing.
Is there anyone stateside that can fix a MKI OT? It needs a new Trig button, the scene A button isn’t working properly - Elektron quoted me $37 for new buttons I can repair myself. The bigger issue is that it seems to think the function button is always pressed sometimes. Nothing can “unstick” it aside from a reboot and occasionally this seems to cause a crash.
What is the behavior of your function button in test mode? Stable? Or does it act as though it’s physically latched during the keys test portion of the error test? Does it display the key press on screen and then release as normal or is it constant in stating that the func key is pressed on the display? If it is showing a constant latched behavior, then one would assume the button itself is borked. You can call a computer repair place or a television repair if such a place still exists, but they’ll just be changing parts. If you need physical diagnosis you might go through a music store that does repairs but they won’t be elektron specialists.
A lot of people say to replace the cf card if you’re getting a freezing/crash behavior. Also to unseat the ribbon cables internally and clean the contacts then carefully reconnect them, but this is all just general advice regarding some of your complaints and the function button behavior is strange because you say a reset clears it but if it’s due to a physical button issue then it should still register as pressed on restart and that would take you into test mode. Ever had that happen?
Test mode comes back 100% on every button including the scene button. (The missing trig however cannot be tested). The strange part is that it would crash when I first got it when I tried to enter test mode. I swapped in my old original factory OT card and since then the random crashes stopped but the button behavior still exists. I’ve already gone through it and reseated all cables and hit contacts with deoxit. If it weren’t for the bad FUNC button I would be fine after changing out the trig and scene buttons.
I have not. I’ll try my other MKI power supply. One thing that concerns me is that when I opened it I found a random screw bouncing around. I couldn’t locate its home. No idea where it came from but I’m hoping it didn’t arc something.
My concern with the behavior is that maybe it’s not the button itself but the multiplexer or something else smaller than that upstream of the button on the circuit board. If something has a bridged link to ground that shouldn’t be there, like the solder is lifting on an IC and needs to be reflowed, then it could be sending a signal like “button is pressed” message or something. I’m not a technician or anything so I’m just guessing.
I doubt arcing from the screw is an issue but it would be good to figure out where it came from. I’d look to your crossfader mount for reason of the inconsistent behavior of the scene A button for the home of the screw.
My OT has had button issues (including ‘latching’ buttons that stay pressed), but what do you mean by crashing? Does it hang, do unexpected things or dump an error message?
Sticky buttons can cause all kinds of strange behaviour because almost every combination is a shortcut.
I’d check all buttons after opening it up. Those buttons are a bit fragile, so even if they work it could help to preventively replace them if they are already loose. The Elektron price includes parcel service so it’s not that expensive to order a few extras. Also, I believe it’s a standard component but not sure where to order it.
