(Help request) Using pickup Machines with synths that are controlled over MIDI?

Hey guys, hope your all doing well! I’ve been trying to find the answer for this, and I cannot find it for the life of me. I would really appreciate any insight or help.

In my current set up I have a launch key mini Mk III hooked up to the midi in of my Octatrack, I use this to control/sequence 2 synth modules that are hooked up through the Octatracks midi out. Normally I just sequence them using the external midi tracks, and record them into the audio buffer. But as I’m learning more about the octatrack, I thought it would be neat to experiment with the pickup machines using my synthesizers. The problem is, to my understanding there is no way to control the pickup machines when your in the midi track mode, and likewise there is no way for me to play my synthesizers when I’m in the pickup track.

My question is is there some thing I’m overlooking? Or is there a way to play your externally controlled synths that doesn’t require for you to be in that synthesizers track?

My apologies in advance, I hope this isn’t confusing and that I am explaining things correctly. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, or if I need to re-explain something please let me know!

I hope you guys have a good day, much love.

Possible if you use the same midi channel for your keyboard, OT midi tracks, and your synth.
This channel has to be different from audio tracks channels (1-8 by default).

You can arm Pickups with Rec buttons, use QREC to arm the recording before playing.
(You can also use midi with audio tracks channels (1-8) or Auto Channel, but I guess you can use 1 channel only on your keyboard?)

Hey man! Thanks for the response, as I’ve been learning the Octatrack over the past few months your posts on the forum have been super helpful!

Is it okay if I ask you a follow up question? I’m at work right now, but if my memory is right, I believe I have my OT’s auto channel and midi keyboard on channel 9. Then when I’m in the midi track mode, my synthesizers are on channels 10 & 11 respectively. I actually disabled Audio CC in a while back to prevent any accidents from happening  . But what your saying is that if I changed one of my synthesizers midi channels to 9, I would be able to play it even if I’m in a different track?

Also to your last tip, what I was trying before was to use the Qrec to arm the pickup machine, then I would switch to the correct midi track and play my synth. But for some reason as soon as I would leave the pickup track’s page, the Qrec would disarm and not record. But what Your saying is that if I have everything on the same midi channel, I will be able to use Qrec to auto record my playing, right? Also I can only use 1 channel at a time of my midi controller, but I can quickly switch channels with 2 button presses.

Sorry man I know that’s a long question, I really appreciate your insight… thank you for the help.

Normally. But I’d set auto channel on a different channel.

 did I say so?
Different channels is better imho.

If you want to control recordings from your keyboard, yes, change channels.

Another possibility : Recorder + Flex. Easy to arm with YES, (ARM ALL, grid recording off).
FN+YES is optional.
