I thought homeboy said he’s not wanting to complete tracks, but wants to jam? Did that change?
Please don‘t listen to everyone on Radio GAS here Maschine+, MPC, 404…Now everyone will tell you to buy their favorite Box. It‘s always the same and it‘s exactly the Problem here. It does not end and its not about music in the end.
Take what you have and combine that. Don‘t buy anything. Make music stop buying!
Or buy something, it’s cool either way.
Why the smart tone?
I do believe it’s a good idea to set oneself objectives or any kk d of slowing decisions when it comes to fighting GAS.
It’s only a suggestion.
Tone? All I said is that he could also buy something.
I like your suggestion, and I also like mine. How do you hear ‘tone’ through words?
I have done all of the suggestions so far. I have had I minimal setup, I have expanded my setup. I have mastered one piece of equipment, I have daisychained numerous pieces.
I have bought gear just to satisfy gas in hopes of it sparking ideas, and it’s worked. All are valid to me and may be to the OP, which is why I offered my opinion.
I’m allowed to share my opinions, correct?
Thanks all, I know there are many of these type posts, but it is generally enlightening to get all the responses - both suggestions and GAS warnings, and also reading so many people relate to what I am saying. This community is really fantastic (most of the time).
A few things people have pointed out. The OP1. Yep, great option. Likewise with the newer MPCs and M+, the MPC keys 47 looks really great
Also, maybe the suggestion about making an album is not a bad idea, even though I said I don’t want to do that!! Maybe that’s the problem and I can still do something like that, with improvised performances rather than ‘fully produced’ - heck this is all for me anyway!
The @LyingDalai idea about waiting a month to purchase something is also interesting and I think very sound advice. Too often I jump in on the next best thing and go down the next day delivery rabbit hole.
Thanks for the support all!
Of course. But in the majority of cases GAS only leads to a pile of gear. People seeking for help here and most of the time the older elektronauts know what would be best. Stop buying gear. Start again when you know what you want and what you need. Don‘t buy a ton of stuff when you struggle to make music. We know the story.
Is being alive for more than half a century good enough to be labelled ‘older’?
So in no instance ever has buying a shiny new piece of gear ever helped anyone? Because if that’s your stance, I am living proof that you are wrong. And its ok, Im very old, experienced, and wise.
I mean older in terms of hanging round here, not exactly how old, but half a century is valid!
Buying a shiny piece of gear may have helped in some instances, but not people struggeling with GAS. In no instance has a nice beer ever helped someone struggeling with alcohol
If that’s important to you, SP404mk2 or Maschine+ are worth considering as you can control them with your feet.
Avoid the MPC because you can’t set up transport/MMC with an external (foot) controller… I’ve walked that painful path for you already.
I still wouldn’t rule out a laptop/DAW/audio interface approach too, use it the same way as you would a ‘standalone’ device.
I’ve been playing live shows recently, and brought elec guitar back into the mix, so I’m 50/50 guitar/synth/knob twiddling… I’ve settled on the Novation Peak as my main live synth with a Keystep 37 in front of it (running into an AH+FX); that gives me all the performative hands-on experience I want/need in a live situation.
Point being; I’d focus on ONE performative synth, and your guitar set up. That’s enough.
@Clarke_111 before you pause any purchases, grab that boss footswitch for the SP!
Fortunately no one talks about modular.
Isn’t that the true rabbit hole!
Yeah that did cross my mind… at that point I absolutely decided enough was enough!!!
Yes, good point-will do. I think that will open up the 404 looping a lot
I disagree that everyone will just list their favorites. Although it is quite common, I agree. In reading the post, I thought I could offer some help. I recommended the Maschine+. It is not my favorite. I did so because it worked well for me and as I posted, my experience has been very similar to the OP. I feel no need to validate my purchases or decisions by pushing them on others. My intention was genuine help.
General observation, not a dig at Monobear. The whole GAS thing is overplayed and needs to go away. It is one of those things that has weaved its way into this niche of ours and I believe it to be meaningless.
Hope it did not come across disrespectful. Wasn‘t meant that way.
Just search GAS, it‘s real and its a problem for really a lot of fellow musicians. When your creativity gets captured by capitalism and you find yourself buried under a pile of stuff but all of the sudden the music left you life, not cool. Sounds dramatic, but many people describe that.
If you like playing and looping guitar it really opens up the looper. I know I sound like a broken record but I’ve been on the hunt for a decent looper and the SP now fills that role! Since I got mine I’ve been playing guitar nightly again and just having fun!
The option of setting the looper to free instead of a predetermined bars makes it super versatile! Especially for someone like me that’s all over the place with rhythm!
No. Not at all. As for GAS, I have seen the concept evolve over the years from just a funny kind of thing to what it has now become. I just don’t like the label on it. The same concept is there across a lot of different aspects of life. I suppose there are some where it’s an actual problem, but I suspect it is not for most. I’ve been known to be wrong though.
This, coming from someone(me) who would most likely be described as having severe GAS at times.
The nice part of buying gear to try is you can usually sell for not much of a loss. I keep a spreadsheet of purchases and sold items. Though I’ve lost money, it was money well spent on what entertains me!
