Help me make a choice

Hi folks,

I’m currently looking for buying either a DTII or a DNII but I can’t wrap my mind around this. In a long term I’ll certainly buy the two. But I can’t decide witch one should be the first.

I already own a DT OG and the second hand market for this kind of piece of gear is not really well developp in my geographic zone. I like the sampling workflow of the DT but really craving for setreo sampling. I own a licence of Bitwig so I think that I should be able to sample all the strange thing that cross my head. But even if Bitwig is for me the DAW it can be mindcrushing to get the sound you want. And I don’t want to use the DTII juste like a 16 loop launcher. Wich I now will happened to make full use of the modulation habilities of the DAW.

In the other hand the DNII get the boxes, I really like the swarm oscillator. And I suck to writting good chord progression. But I’m affraid to lack some voice if I go the “One Box Way”.

Good to know that I own a LaunchControl XL3 and I plan to use it as a part of the worflow. The DT OG is a bumer for EXT MIDI CC so yet I only play with one pattern or it’s really foggy to make the stuff work on multiple patterns.

I know it’s a GAS spike, but anyway.

Guys I’m lost and I need your Help.

The question is do you want sampling or synthesis? There is no correct answer. You already have a digitakt 1 so I’d go digitone 2, but if that’s not your preferred workflow then you’ll never be happy bc it will never be a sampler.

Given you already have a DT, I would go for the DN2. It has become my favourite synth in terms of versatility. It can do nice pads with the Swarm machine, it can do a decent enough 303 impression, fantastic drums.

Whatever advice you get, you will only know if it works for you when you try it yourself. In your position I would pick the DN first. It will give you the ext midi upgrade, you can try the DN and as you will now have all the extra DN tracks maybe you can start to sacrifice two tracks on your OG DT to fullfil your stereo dream?

I think I want both but for now maybe more the synthesis side of the moon.

My actual worflow with the DT is 4-5 drum voices and the rest is dedicated to tonal stuff like pads, drones, synth line samples with some splice machine and random lfo stuff.

But I need to craft the sound outside of the box and it’s killing me sometimes to take time to fine tune my sound and my “proto-arrangement” before samplig it to realise that I can’t make it work the way i’ll like.

In the other hand stereo sampling allows you to have an immense pad of 16 voices with different random modulation trough a supermassive on one track.

I know I’ll buy both but I want to choose the “good one” and really use it

But I take note of your sugestion for the DN.

Thank you

Thank’s for the answer.

I’ve already tried the 2 tracks trick with not so much succes. I can’t make it work with the way the DT take stereo file and convert it to mono via transfert. But maybe I’m just a dumbass ^^’

You would need to take the stereo file into your daw and split the left and right into mono, then after importing into the DT you would hard pan your left channel to the left on one track, and your right channel to the right on another track.

If you want to sample straight into the DT1, you would need to play the source from the DAW or any device which can pan the stereo channels left and right, to hard pan. The other option would be to use a Y cable which goes TRS out of your stereo source and then take only the mono source from 1 side at a time when you sample, selecting the input for the side that you want.

When you sample, it will give you the recording of only the input source you’ve selected in the sample recorder screen and then once you’ve sampled left and right individually and trimmed them, you will need to set them each on their own track and hard pan those tracks in the correct directions.

Any adjustment to start time if sampled to the hardware, will have to be performed at the track level.

That’s the only way to do it. Record or import the stereo image separately, left and right, then on the digitakt recreate the stereo image with 2 tracks and hard panning.

It’s so obvious that I’m ashamed…

I’ll try that next time.

Nothing is obvious if we have never done it before. Don’t worry about it too much and just have fun

Learn the basics of chord progressions if you suck at it. Its quite liberating. And will save you money in the long run.
