Ah, my bad
I wish you all the best on your journey but based on what you’ve already used and tried and decided for yourself, I don’t think there’s any hardware that exists on earth that will satisfy all of your requirements.
My advice is to dig deeper, and not rely on any particular piece of gear for a “rugged and rough” sound. That comes from within, regardless of the tools you use.
i had it for a year and the sequencing was probably the most frustrating thing about it. it took a good amount of tweaking to make individual drums that i’d found from records sound good, but i could live with that if it were fun to work on. it’s all up to personal choice though, so if you save up for it i say do it ! it might click for you in a way it didn’t for me.
word up, that’s real. maybe i’m looking for something that comes from spending enough time with a machine and making it my own
Combo of the dt1 which I believe you already have or dt2 + an mpc one or live retro is the answer, sound design on the dt, sample layer and design/ sequence on the mpc… in no time they will seem like one instrument
Exactly what i felt as well. So im like you looking:)
DT II and MPC one is a killer combo for any modern beat based music, experimental or traditional, very inspiring.
how’s the Digitakt 2 treating you? i’m super interested in it but i’ve heard that there’s some features missing (like having the option for mono sampling) and some bugs that need to be ironed out.
has anyone had any experience with the Sonicware Lofi 12 XT? i think it might be a good companion to my digitakt, but i haven’t been able to get my hands on one to demo it.
Have you considerded the new MKSREC1 coming out shortly? Ive got my name down for one.
Keep using DT1 but will add DT2 later this or next year, not in rush. I’m sure all issues will be fixed eventually with firmware updates.
it looks absolutely beautiful, but i’m kinda burnt out on SP1200 clones and the like.
I know what you mean. But it maybe perfect and not like the S2400 which became a completely different thing.
For a little vintage vibe akai s20 is pretty cool thing. Just in case.
I have a pretty similar sampler journey to you, mpc1000/2000xl being the machines that I’ve used for years before jumping onto DT, ARmk2, various sp404 models and the zoom sampletrak the last few years.
I’ve settled on the s2400 as my favorite modern sampler, as the workflow feels similar to old mpc’s to me and the sound is amazing. What about the workflow didnt work for you?
As alternatives you could look into the new mpc’s or machine, but those feel too much like a daw to me.
Another option would be a combo like DT or OT for sequencing and zoom sampletrak or sp303/202 for sample chopping and sound.
PUTs are the bomb. Thes One is a big influence on my style honestly.
Anyway you mention DT is great but no manual slicing, have you looked into the octatrack?
Second this. The Maschine+ workflow is easy to get down but it really opens up once you get a grasp on how Ideas and Scenes work.
Yeah honestly the Octatrack seems like it would be a good choice based your needs and intended workflow.

your current dt1 is the perfect front in for an MPC one, and even though the one only has stereo in/out… you can connect it to a usb mixer with it’s recent class compliancy feature and expand it’s in /out to 32 channels I think… so grab a usb mixer, connect to the mpc and juice them with the digitakt.
the dt1 you already have will give you all of the mono you want and the mpc will give you all of the stereo and unparalleled sample slicing that you want… plus compared to the mpc 1000 the FX on the mpc one are super dope and useful…
also your digitakt can sample from your computer or iOS devices as well so you’re mpc could easily do that via your digitakt too.
I’ve been on this journey for many years
I have tried Akai MPC1000, Akai MPC4000, Akai MPC5000, Toraiz SP16, Live, Maschine, OT1, EMU 6400, Roland SP404 mk2, Akai s950, Akai S1000, Akai S3000, Polyend Tracker and OP-1.
All left me lacking for one reason or another.
Then… the DT2 came out……. All my prayers in one box.
