Hello everyone,
I hope everyone is having good time and enjoy this place and being part of the electronic music makers society.
I’m new member and just wanted to introduce myself before posting anything else. Thought it would be good idea… however not going to fall into irrelevant talk.
I’m Chavdar and making electronic music (live jamming not production) became my hobby two years ago. I had slow progress as it is something I practice on the side while working full time in events industry. I have been using korg volca series sample, bass, fm… just jamming and experimenting and recently got tb 03 for some acid sounds and drumbrute impact for some advanced drum programming. Anyways got to the point I was a bit bored of the sounding and the limitation (sequence lenght wise mostly) of my volcas although they still have huge room for expansion together with the rest of the gear I have and I thought it would be nice to compliment them with nice sequencer and sampler (effects) and I choose octatrack, and regardless its complexity I think I will manage to make it work they way I want and be able to produce more dynamic and long sets. Btw just recently got nts 1 nutekt for effects and some leads.
So far so good( not so good but we are getting there haha) however I had a problem wih the actual sounding and of the mix.
Everything sounds very muddy and after research I decided to add to my setup compressor to add up some dynamic seperation between differend sounds. I bought FRM RNC really nice compressor and I thought it will be more straight forward to set it up but I was wrong and aparently I’m doing smth incorrect.
Everytime I was in need of some information regarding my music I was able to find it somewhere on the net someone has asked about it so I had no need to post and fall into explanations about same thing. And thats why I come to this forum just now. Not even sure if I’m creating the topic in the right category. But for the future I will make sure it relates to the specific issue.
Sooo, how do you guys connect the rnc to octatrack for side chain compression? If anyone has experience with these two devices please share how do you work with them.
Please correct me what Im doing wrong:
What I do is taking one of the cues from octatrack, where I cue my kick and send it to the compressor for the ducking effect. I use insert cable where the ring is the return and the tip is send as it says in the manual so I can get back the kick signal to octatrack un affected. I can see the compressor reacts to the kick but the signal back is very loud sine wave clipping to the maximum. The mains of the octatrack are thrownto the ins of the RNC and the outs of the compressor are going in to my speakers. So basicly compression the the master without the kick. I thought innitially I was using wrong cable but I changed it and I dont see any difference tbh in any trs balanced to 2xts unbalanced cables. Im definetly doing something wrong.
I read somewhere I can use passive mixer/splitter to split the signal and rout it back to the octatrack or to the mixing desk whatsoever if have one. But is it this the way it supposed to work? I though this is how insert cables work and in compressors’ world it just sends back the dry kick signal after triggering the compression.
Would much appreciate if someone advises me what to do and not only on that particular issue but in general if you see smth that will benefit my setup. Im still quite new into this world so any advices a welcome. For the moment dont want to buy any additional gear until I get used to all I have… octatrack is quite deep, but if necessary and will improve my music a lot I will be okay to spend some extra money.
Thanks in advance!
