Heat - potential hardware issues when buying used

Hi,

I’m about to buy myself a used Heat for using as a master effect for my live rig.
At the moment I just need the features of the mk1.
But… are there any known hardware issues that makes you recommend me buying the mk2/+fx instead of the mk1 when looking for a used one?
Anything particular I must check when buying one?

MK1 is mono, MK2 is stereo.

Wut

All versions of the AH released to-date are stereo in and out. The Mk2 and +FX offer mono-input via the use of a single cable whereas the Mk1 does not.

No issues but one being mono and the other stereo is the major difference you should be aware of.

They are both stereo.

Helpful comparisons might be found with a bit of a search … here’s one

I’ve been under the impression MK1 was mono and even bought the MK2 because of that. WTH.

I would have bought MK1 instead, it looks better.

I’m not certain, but I think the refresh was only for logistical or parts reasons iirc.

I guess you might be thinking of the Analog Drive pedal? That is basically a mono version of Heat in pedal form.

Claid highlighted the key difference.

Mk1 requires a TS to dual TS splitter (Y cable) to accept a mono input whereas mk2 and +fx can accept a mono signal via single TS cable and still output a stereo signal.

I think that megamind is misinterpreting the mk1 behavior which is probably that applying an undistributed mono signal to the left input on a mk1 will yield a lop-sided stereo output. It won’t automatically double the mono image like mkII and +fx.

This is very different from being a mono device though. This is the behavior of a stereo device which is unable to create a stereo image from a mono source.

Also, one issue that comes up occasionally with heat is that one stereo channel will be louder than the other, but it’s not a super common issue and it’s probably due to a failing volume pot which is not a problem unique to AH, it seems to happen occasionally to other elektron gear as well.

Just something to be aware of, if one ear sounds louder than the other when monitoring.
