I love that you use the term 'Trekkie". I am an old, dyed-in-the-wool Trekkie and never resented the term and never felt the need to refer to myself as a ‘Trekker’ (this was actually a thing fans were concerned about back then). I went to Trek conventions in the 70s and 80s, when they were independently staged by hardcore fans. The time I met Ms. Nichols, she was filling in for James Doohan, who’d had a heart attack just before the beginning of the convention weekend (he was in the hospital at which my mom worked as an ultrasound tech). Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols graciously flew in to take his place as convention guests at the last minute. They were both lovely, giving their time and tales to any and all, while keeping the fans filled in on Mr. Doohan’s situation. This would have been in June of '81 when I was a young lad of 14 years old.
