I used to have a Matrix 1000 rack unit that was 6-part multitimbral, and thus perfect for controlling with a guitar-to-midi converter, allowing individual notes to be bent within chords, etc.
The Monomachine has a “poly” mode, but as far as I am aware this just puts all 6 voices into one multi-timbral part, controlled by one channel. My question is this: is it possible to set up a scene or whatever, where all 6 tracks have the same synth machine and the same sound, and receive MIDI from channels 1-6 respectively (T1 from channel 1, T2 from channel 2, etc.)? Or do the 6 tracks have to play 6 different machines?
That’s actually a good idea, I do have a GK3/GR-20 that i haven’t used in a while actually thinking that different machines for different strings would actually be pretty great, too.
I have setup & played with a monomachine + 6 stringed midi guitar… really a suitable match. As PeterHanes mentioned, very easy to copy a sound across all 6 MM tracks.
Via the Roland GK stuff its pretty easy to set up multiple midi channels. My weapons were a Godin Synth guitar & Roland GI-20 but most of the modern (ie. last 25 years) Roland G-synth stuff can work this way.
A few of the cheaper Gtr-Midi converters only work in Mono and dont have control per string. You don’t clarify what your exact setup is.
Irregardless, A few ‘maybe obvious’ tips…
Nice having same patch on each MM track, but slightly edited variations that gave some great subtlety to things rather than just caning a single patch all across the fretboard.
Also for ambient chords was quite creative using different synth sounds per track… makes for some nice evolving ambiences
Also… Midi tracking usually pretty average on bottom E string, so turn that particular string off (no midi sent from it)(or send the bottom E to the same track as the A string), then set up 5 MM channels for the midi, & the 6th track, actually plug in the output from the normal guitar pickups. Can mix the original guitar signal (with say gating/rev/dist/filter/lfo’s etc) with the synthy stuff, all on one machine (though you will want a guitar DI before the input)
^ great ideas! I have a GI-10 but didn’t really think of using it with the monomachine (though I have used it with my microbrute and it works really well)… Having said that I also have the Boss GP-10 which is a lot more compact for taking out to gigs etc… although it’s obviously not as deep as the monomachine!
Perhaps I’ll have to give it a try at some point
Hello
Sorry for the basic question…
I just got the monomachine last night and i’ve been trying to set it up so that each track receives midi on different midi channels like you describe.
I can’t figure out how.
Please help
Thank you for answering.
I have read that part of the manual but haven’t been able to get it.
I have a linnstrument and I read what you guys talked about and thought it would apply to me as well but maybe I’m wrong.
It works fine as a controller for each track (and poly), but I want to be able to assign a different midi in channel for each of the tracks on monomachine and then send midi out on multiple channels from linnstrument.
Let’s say I set linnstrument to send midi out on channels 1 to 6. Can I set monomachine to receive midi channel one on track 1 ch 2 on track 2 and so on. Like you guys I want to copy the same sound to all tracks and use it like a synth (I red how to copy and such…)
I’ve tried a lot of different midi settings but I can only make it work assigning auto track (or what it’s called) to a channel then assigning linnstrument to the same channel but then that channel goes for all the tracks.
Yeah the linnstrument can send up to 16 channels at the same time. It’s an amazing instrument. I think it works great with the monomachine so far. Really nice with those independent pitch slides. Now I just have to figure out how to map cc messages hehe. The monomachine is my first experience with elektron and I have to say I’m very impressed.
