GR-2 from Tasty Chips

When will it be available to buy normally without KS nonsense?

I have a feeling this will be their best selling product they’ve done by a mile.

They put out an update yesterday with their target schedule :

  • May: disk image (DONE)
  • June: optimize & finalize PCB layout, open preorders (most likely)
  • July: GR-MEGA firmware 1.7, release firmware GR-2
  • August: production start
  • September: ship first units
  • October: ship the last Kickstarter unit
  • Nov-Dec: start shipping preorder units

They also gave other info, like an image of their final ( hopefully ) silk screen, and that they have improved their touchscreen driver performance, and have added microtonal scales.

If so, it may be a while before they produce enough to have stock on hand rather than a pre-order queue.

Can the GR-2 play samples polyphonically from a midi keyboard like the 1010 Tangerine can? Such as piano or strings.

The GR-Mega does and the GR-2 is based on the same code base, so I would assume it does play samples polyphonically via MIDI.

Does anyone know if workflow improvements will ship with the GR-2?

Are people’s main gripe with the existing product line is that it’s too menu intensive?

You mean gripes about the GR-1 ?

Yeah Tasty Chips is well aware, and they’re working this part of the design on the GR-2 extensively. It’s been posted about upthread in several posts, ( among them post-1, post-2, post-3 ) and in more detail on their Kickstarter page. Like for instance :

GR-2 seems like it will be fairly easy to navigate the menus, especially with the tile menu, touchscreen, and quick access buttons.

They just implemented the tile menu on GR-Mega, and it’s pretty nice. I can imagine it’d be even easier with a touchscreen.

Right on.

Any S4 users thinking of picking up a GR? Even when it was buggy as all hell, the S4 was still a well designed sampler.

But apparently Tasty Chips is more full featured on the granular side of things.

What’s your unpopular take?

There was discussion started comparing the S-4 and the GR-2 over in this thread :

Other competitive options could be considered over there too. I think more apples to apples to the GR-2 would be with the Oddment ODD-1 ( thread ).

Tasty Chips just released an awesome update with fw 1.7.0.

Makes you wonder why they’re not advertising their stuff more aggressively…

edit: whoops, wrong thread… but it’ll still apply to GR-2 once it’s out

No update on this yet, so the port to the GR-2 is probably still in progress, though imminent. I expect this update soon.

With the update TC may put out a short video showing the 2 with the ( what will be ) release fw.

Me too, a little, though they still don’t have the 2 up for pre-order. That is scheduled to happen soon.

They need to open up pre-orders for promotion to have any meaning. Advertising a product that can’t be ordered frustrates customers.

Plus once they ship the 100 KS units there will be a natural buzz, without any hype.

All in good time – good time being yesterday for a waiting buyer.

Given the differences between the Mega and the 2 there is still a “port”, and it needs testing and adjustments made to complete.

( What do others think, a selective build / compile ? )

Smart to keep the codes together though so that the core code stays coherent.

That’s usually accomplished with compiler directives and can be automated. Obviously, it still needs to be tested and polished but feature-wise they are similar and will be sharing the same code base but with code added that will end up on one device but not on the other, depending on their respective hw features.

All that kept in some sort of version control.

There is quite a bit of difference, between the two to keep segregated.

Any automated testing will have two hardwares and all the versions too.

KS Update on September 1st

Kickstarter fulfillment in early October, and building another batch for general retail immediately after that. Things in general are coming together well.

EDIT : Fixed image download, i think ?

Just preordered a Silver one - looks nicer to me than the black, sort of retro futuristic or something

Ordered mine, but in black :+1:

I think this will be a special bit of gear. I had an original GR-1 but this is much more desirable.

this looks very interesting! I hope the hardware is solid and better than its competitors.

same as I would consider this, Tempera, Torso S4 or Tonverk as my hardware granular purchase in future. Waiting for kinks and bugs to get worked out though for the time being and using ipad apps.
