Thanks to that damned Expressive E Touché video I too am now lusting for a Pro 2. The paraphonic design allows for a unique performance technique or two when playing chords - in short, I agree with the Keyboard Mag. reviewer who thought of it as a feature rather than a disadvantage.

Suffering from Modular GAS again…the Eurocrack is calling me…

Expensive, no patch memory, space consuming, “hipster-ish”, nothing that I can’t do with my setup (AR/A4/laptop)…

It seems that’s the lego syndrom: I want to BUILD something on my own (physically and sonically) and PLAY with it, all these colored panels, wires and beautiful knobs…

Maybe I should try to find a placebo.

Yesterday I was playing with the JP-08 at a music store.
Really fun device and I was impressed with a build quality (solid knobs, etc).
It was hard to not buy it but I won!

Been suffering from tons of GAS as it relates to the Moog Matriarch… thing sounds fantastic!

Long story short is I’m thinking of selling off a few synths to make room for the Matriarch… trying a less is more approach going forward. Last few years I’ve bought and sold so much gear, trying to find my way and figure out what I like and dislike.

My main synths are the OB6 and Subsequent 37… I would be selling my MiniBrute 2… Behringer Odyssey and a few boutique pedals to make room for the Matriarch…

Question is… are the Subsequent 37 and Matriarch similar sonically? Do they complement each other? Yea I know it’s very subjective but I appreciate any insight.

I figure can’t go wrong with Moog ( I have a Mother 32, Subharmonicon and DFAM lol)

Thoughts??

I don’t have a Subsequent 37 myself but I did take a good look at it a couple of years ago when I was looking for a mono synth. And I do have a Matriarch.

While I think there’s obviously a certain moogness to the sound of both synths, I think they’re very different from each other. I prefer the Matriarch for a lot of reasons, but it basically depends on what you’re looking to get - what role are you looking the Matriarch to fill. I’m sure the two would also co-exist nicely. If you think you could get good mileage out of the 4-voice paraphony, stereo filter and delay and extensive semi-modular capabilities, then Matriarch is an awesome pick! Then again, considering that you have an OB-6 and a Subsequent 37 and a Subharmonicon - that’s three THICK sounding synths. Like on the OB-6, on the Matriarch the filter is your friend, so no problem probably. But worth giving some thought to.

Perhaps surprisingly there doesn’t seem to be an actual comparison video between a Subsequent 37 and Matriarch. There are a couple between a Sub37 and Grandmother, so maybe take a look at those.

All in all, if I were you and was able to fund the majority of a Matriarch by selling some gear I don’t use, I would definitely go for the Matriarch. That’s pretty much what I did a couple months ago myself, actually.

It’s a cool synth but I don’t really see what it adds to your current setup, which is already overwhelmingly (entirely?) analog synths.

If you don’t want to over-moog, you might consider a Vermona Perfourmer. I’ve seen a few interesting comparison threads between the Matriarch and the Perfourmer.

And thats how GAS works. Be honest how many times have you said “This sounds fantastic”

It never ends. If you cant create music with the instruments you have then you wont with any. You are looking for something that doesnt exist… a mirage.

Another suggestions: Use what you’ve got to make 5 tracks/jams you are proud enough of to upload on YouTube/Soundcloud/Elektronauts, and then decide if you need to buy anything or want to sell anything.

It has half worked for me. I have not made the aforementioned 5 tracks, but it has kept me from buying and selling shit for no good reason.

Alot of synths yeah. I have an Octatrack and Digitakt as well. Use the SP404 often as well. But it’s true. It does sound amazing but so does the stuff I already have!

This is good advice. I should also mention I’m getting the Matriarch at a highly discounted price. About 800USD less than retail So I don’t mind selling off some stuff to capitalize on that deal.

considering your setup, I would sell the stuff you plan to sell but buy nothing
you have more than enough great sounding synths.
That said. Yes matriarch looks and sounds amazing. Much better than the sub37 for my taste.
But many synths do sound great.

Lol. What a concept! Buy nothing? Has never crossed my mind … you make a great point thought. I’m really just trying to have a few go to synths. I like the semi modular layout of the Matriarch. Will continue to push me in terms of patching. Decisions… decisions.

Let the jury know that I also own a bunch of other synths that have yet to be mentioned lol. But those aren’t hooked up on my main desk. A Micro Freak and a couple Behringer clones… Model D, K2, and Pro One.

Recently I’ve found myself jamming about on a few synths through some nice pedals and recording to my H6. Then I dump that in the Octatrack and build something. Which eventually ends up in Ableton.

This method has made me wayyyyy more productive because I can focus in on patching and melody and I don’t feel bad not using all the synths. I can try to get the most out of each one.

But I digress. The Matriarch would be a staple of my setup and one of my go to synths. Leaning on selling off stuff and buying. And then reporting back here lol.

I say sell what you’re not into for the moment, buy what you think you’ll like, try it out, and then sell that and move on if that doesn’t fit the bill. I for one feel like there’s no harm in selling and buying if you’re just wanting to try out gear to try out gear. If you’re always thinking you need this “one thing” that will make your music awesome, that’s a fools errand haha. I’m not saying that’s you at all, but I think lots of people think people gassing is just because they’re looking for their magic cure-all, but hey, some people just like trying stuff. I personally like trying all kinds of gear and I sort of maintain a “gear bucket-list” that I try to live by, but honestly after a while it gets really tiring and you’ll sort of get over buying everything that looks cool and realize you’d much rather just make music. That’s kind of where I am personally. I do know, after owning a ton of gear over the years, that at least I know if I ever want something for a specific project, I already know what it can do and whether or not I like it, which is kinda cool. I say do what you want and don’t worry about it as long as you’re not hurting yourself financially haha, plus you can always re-evaluate and buy something you’ve sold over again anyway!

I think this is where I’m at. I just got into more electronic type music in the last 3-4 years. I’ve literally tried a bunch of different synths to find what I really vibe with. And because good gear holds value I usually have no problem reselling. It hasn’t hindered me or slowed down my creativity. If anything I feel like it’s opened it up. So I probably will get that Matriarch.

I agree with this. The nice thing about music hardware is that it maintains its value. You don’t lose a whole lot buying a synth, trying it out for a while, and then selling it. I’ve done this as well and I feel like it’s allowed me to zero in on the setup that is right for me.
