Gain structure when sampling

Murray Christmas, errbody!

What has given you all the best results when sampling into the OT? I still haven’t found the sweet spot.

My approach so far has been (using a hot, compressed, line level input from a subgroup on my mixer) to push up the OT input channel gain by ~12db. I then back the subgroup level down to just below where the OT input channel clips. I generally turn Amp vol all the way up, don’t touch track level, which I leave at 90%.

This gives me relatively clean (but quiet) recordings. If I use other samples, they are much louder. The OT compressor seems to bring up the noise floor to unacceptable levels. My workflow (real-time looping) doesn’t allow me to normalize samples while I work.

Anybody having better luck?
