you’re just creating new chains, if you keep doing it you’ll run out of slots(64) and it’ll behave like your friend’s
if you want to achieve that ‘reset’ you could hold in stop before you even press play and then keep ‘trigging’ play - not a convenient technique by any means 
or if u like to use pattern direct start change mode you could just restart the pattern (quantized) by reselecting it, but you won’t get the chaser light as confirmation !
