Hi
So, after quite some time transitioning from a full daw set up to a full hardware, I feel like my current set up has basically achieved its mission : having a hardware option for everything I used to use when producing in Ableton. And I love it (best decision I ever made when it comes to creativity, although my bank isn’t to sure about it). I use it to produce tracks and to play live.
BUT, I feel there is something missing, which would be a synth with a bit more “creative fun”, something that would take me out of my sonic comfort zone to bring on new ideas and possibly “on the spot” improvisations when playing live. Some of the gear I own (see the list below) of course allow very creative stuff, but as I’ve set it up to produce some sounds that are quite necessary to my process, I tend to use it for exactly what I have in mind and nothing too crazy.
The idea here is not to fulfill a need, all I want is something a bit different, fun and not too hard to play with. Budget on this would be alongside the lines of 600 euros, cheaper or/and second hands options prefered
As I’m fitting all my gear into a very tiny space, I’m aiming at pretty small synths, while still trying to have something that can be hands on (tried the nanoboxes, didn’t like it as much as I thought i would).
Note that I’m producing mainly techno/deep techno stuff, but also downtempo/ambient dub, prog trance … I think what I’d like would either be a rich, atmospheric texture and pad machine, or something with more percussive and weird synth sounds to create unexpected grooves. Either way I want something that feels and sound a bit crazy
For now, the machines that are on my “why not” list are :
- Quadrantid Swarm : seems really fun but every reviews and test I’ve watched seem to produce harsh sounds for techno patterns, not super versatile (am I wrong ?)
- Lyra 8 : love the all crazy sounding part of it, but I’ve read it’s quite difficult to achieve nice sound design without getting completely lost ?
- Sonicware Liven Texture lab or Ambient 0 : seem to sound great, very texture and pad orientated but I’m not too sure about using it live, seems a bit programmation oriented
I’ve looked at other stuff that seem a bit to wild (the soma stuff for example). But I’m pretty sure this forum will have ressources in terms of GAS
What I’m curently using and how I’m using it :
- Octatrack as midi sequencer, live looper, performance mixer and sometimes drum loops or atmospheres
- Digitone as my FM machine for arps, mid/bass tones, metalic sounds …
- Syntakt for anything drums, background/atmo stabs + sub bass
- Roland P6 for pads and basically as anything that requires a polyphonic sampler
- moog minitaur for basslines
- Bluesky reverb to give a little brightness to the all thing
- JT4000 for wavetable synthesis
