Fun Sample Chopping Tools

When I manually set the BPM, then click “Find Samples” it still intelligently slices. I’m on v1.4, maybe the functionality changed in the more recent versions?

Been wanting a new take on Recycle & the rex format over the past few years. I loved chopping, stretching & pitching loops in that for use in other places. If I wasn’t on IOS I’d still be using it.

I think korg gadget has a Rex sampler?

I have Bitwig and FL on my laptop.

Slicex on FL + separate output + mixer magic+ piano roll could bring you pretty far for chopping and mangling… Or just using any Daw ; but I guess it’s not as immediate as a Vst with magic buttons, and I guess it’s not

quick and fun

If you’re not used to those digital environnement.

Still, Slicex could be powerful and it provided me some really cool samples from it’s autodetect function. But it’s weird af (like all image-line products) and it even needs an external script just for slicing something into 16 equal parts.

I bought the new loopmix app by audio modern and it’s excellent for sample mangling. Think it has a demo to try out

I’ve been looking too. I’m also in bitwig.

I come from Ableton and haven’t been able to beat Simpler.

I’ve tried Serato, Vice, Momentum, Redux.

Redux is cool if you want to go deeper and maybe sequence a few mini beats, tracker style.

Still none of them really clicked with me for immediacy. Not even Serato.

Something cool you can try in bitwig though:

For a while I was doing simple slicing by using samper with a unique modulator setup.

I used the note modulator and linked a few piano keys to pre set up macro modulators that link to the sample start parameter per key, or “Note.”

In practice, I would just bang some keys and twist a single knob to scrub through a sample. And I’d have anything <12 samples available with this method. Which was enough for many things.

From there you could have a ball and link those same note “slices” to anything you want. Warp parameters, filtering, envelopes, whatever.

This is kind of the beauty of BW, I wish they would help facilitate this with a better, Simpler like device or mode for the sampler.

In Redux can you do the Alt-t select all and then choose random notes like in Renoise? I am thinking about chopping breaks in redux inside of Bitwig for drums then doing the other elements in bitwigs piano roll.
