From Korg to Roland to Elektron

Greetings Folks.

Hope your enjoying the weekend.

I’m first a guitarist/singer who learned bass, drums & enough synth to write songs.

I do everything hardware, Roland vs recorder… For drums I was using a Yamaha DR Xpreess with sounds from my Boss. Dr880. While I think it’s a great drum machine, I’ve felt my drum sounds were lacking.

I picked up the newer Korg e l e c t r I b e sampler for the sounds on my ETC. Unfortunately, the memory on the Korg is ridiculously small making it unworkable for my needs.

I hear about the Roland S P 404 s x. With s d cards virtually unlimited memory. Unfortunately, the midi drums had enough of a latency to throw off my drumming.

Enter Elektron Rytm. I have had an eye on the D S I Tempest forever & then stumbled on Elektron. Lots of research & unsure whether the Octatrack would be better or the Rytm.

Chose the Rytm because the filters & effects are supposedly better, it’s supposed to be a bit more user friendly, it can use samples and I really like drum machine factor.

So far I really like the Ragamuffin kit & many others. Being a slow learner (learning disability) I know it’s really uphill, but I am very grateful for you guys, and the Elektron is really special.

I am working on loading samples (Simon Phillips Loop Loft kit), and trying to create a standard drum set to trigger with my DTXpress.

Here’s a couple of my original songs…

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks!

(your links aren’t working for me… also not if I access them through your youtube profile)

Same here. You may need to change the access settings on the videos (eg set to Public rather than Private).

Thanks for letting me know.

I went to settings & “Added” the videos.

Otherwise it read youtube was allowed… hmmm?

Here’s a ink to Soundcloud. Hopefully this will work…

I’m not one for commenting on others’ work in terms of suggestions etc - anyway, the videos are not available here either.
But if by suggestions you’re up for improving your workflow or Elektron experience - i’d say, by all means create a conventional kit using the sample playback side of the RYTM, but if you want to get a more rewarding expressivity from the nuance from the electronic drums, do explore the synthesis side as it will be more fun to vary those parameters than the params available on the sample side
.
Probably a lot of fun to be had by combining real pads and playing with the elektron sequencer, even if you don’t record note input from the drumpads you could have the sequencer sequencing parameters ‘waiting’ for you to play - depends on your musical tastes or what you want to get from the Elektron I suppose - if your DT Xpress supports dual triggering from one pad, maybe explore assigning one sound to one of the single-voice/dual-track and the other part to the other track - at least that way it’s unlikely you’ll strike two pads which try to play the same voice (like CY & RS or 11 & 12 )
.
In fact maybe there’s more mileage on the sample side if you can load sample chains into the respective tracks - like have a series of hits with increasing realistic dynamics ‘baked in’ to the sample that you access by velocity variation - wouldn’t sound so static then - even four or more samples spread over the range would spice it up :+1:

Hey Avantronica.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I don’t know what’s up with the videos, the settings looked okay. I also put songs on my profile…

Thanks!
