I am one of the crazies around here who wants to be an artist, and maintain my family with my music money… Difficult path to choose we all know…
Anyway, being talented and passionate is not enough, we all need to sway with the industry and try to foresee tendencies.
As a newbie (I have been releasing music since January 2014) on this industry and completely independent artist - since everything I learned (besides djing) was by my own research - I find very difficult to make money out of it and find my own space in the local scene…
On the (psy/goa) trance it is actually common to distribute your hard work for free ( http://www.ektoplazm.com ) and get a decent reputation faster, but on techno/house/electronic, being charted on these big music selling sites, is one of the surest ways to get your name to the next level.
Would you agree with this, and would you be willing to distribute your precious art for free?
Personally I am going to do this soon… I believe small independent artists do not profit out of music selling but out of concerts. And this is why I am putting a Live Set together with the help of Elektron Gods.

welcome to Elektron… may the gods roll their dice in your favour … … regarding your question with profitability and such … I gave up before I even tried … before I was making music I came across VERY talented people who stuggled to even make a dime, or be paid for concerts, working their asses off and so on… I have much less talent, so I figure, I dont need to try really because the competition is light years ahead of me … did I crush anybodies dreams?

making money with music, especially if you’re an independent artist, is really hard i guess, at least it has been so since i started but…
i believe that if you really want to get there (won’t start any speech here, no worries 
) you have to try at least, and if you find yourself wanting to try again…well, that’s a good thing 
in reality though, it isn’t always like this and you may end up nowhere even though you keep trying
it’s probably a combination of many factors, one of them being lady luck (not duck, luck 
) there’re many people here that will surely tell you more. enjoy the ride
