Forward AUTO from A4 to another A4

Hi

So my question in short is:

Is it possible to use one Keystep to work as a “Auto channel” keyboard for two A4s, if the A4s are only connected by MIDI out to MIDI in? Given that the Keystep goes to MIDI in on one of the A4s. Somehow forward the midi data.

In detail my setup is like this:

I have a Keystep which I want to use to be able to play on two A4’s, using the AUTO channels.

In my setup A4-1 is the master, A4-2 is the slave, meaning A4-1 controls transpose, clock and program changes.

The connections are like this:

A4-1 MIDI OUT > A4-2 MIDI IN
Keystep MIDI OUT > A4-1 MIDI IN

Channel setup:
A4-1 AUTO channel: 14
A4-2 AUTO channel: 15

Now I can use the Keystep to play A4-1 on channel 15, but when I switch to channel 14 to play the A4-2, nothing happens. But when I connect the Keystep directly to A4-2, it works fine. So I guess the channels are not forwarded.

I could connect from the through port on A4-1 to input on A4-2, but then A4-1 can’t control the A4-2.

Is it possible to achieve this, to control both A4s from the Keystep?

regards
Frimann

A MIDI merger would solve the problem. Merge the out and the thru from A4-1 and route it in to A4-2. Set two different non-overlapping auto channels on each device.

I have one of these:

Interesting. Looks like a good solution.
