The aesthetic here is home cooking, but since @LyingDalai has recently expanded the conversation, I will contribute my lunch today. I am visiting India for the first time in… well, I was one-third my age the last time I visited, and I am not young.
This cost me ₹400, or about 4€. I had a second refill on the rice and sambar. There was a “special” version available on Sundays (like today) but I caught a glimpse of it, and there was no way I could eat that much.
Well, to be honest, I don’t either, but it was tasty. I am Indian only in name and phenotype. I was told what everything was but much of it didn’t register. Far right was “avial” but quite different from what my parents would make (my father grew up in Chennai but this is a Keralan restaurant). Left of rice is “thoran”, sort of a mixed veg prep. I think above rice is “pineapple pachadi”. On left is a banana, banana chips, and chunks of jaggery (raw sugar), none of which I touched. Behind the crispy thing is ginger chutney and mango pickle (both good). Cups at top are, I think, “rasam” (a tart, thinner lentil soup), then what my family would call “cuddy” (something similar but smoother and yogurt is involved, and Web search isn’t helping me), and then two sweets I didn’t recognize. I can’t ask my parents about this because I didn’t tell them I was going on this trip.
[Edit: I am in Mumbai. Partner is attending a conference, I am hanging out. We have some vacation time in Kerala after this, and I have some interesting addresses in this city, so I might manage some more mysteries for all of you.]
Future food. Hopefully. I moved to the country and started a mini homestead. These are fuji apple blooms just starting. Pears and peaches are inground as well. My backyard farming capacity has grown by 16x. Exciting times.
Whoa. Congrats! Best of luck! At the very least it should be amazing knowing you’re growing and raising healthy food to put on the table.
Spent many years dreaming about this. Still do on occasion. I also still catch myself watching these YouTube homesteading channels, scratching my chin, and pondering if I’m too old for it, or not.
I’m not a fan of brassica’s at all, or only a few of them, and they are mostly the Asian varieties (baby bok choy, choy sum).
You know how some people don’t do cilantro cause their genes make it take like soap to them? There’s also a gene some people have that make brassica‘s insanely bitter, and that’s me. Cabbage has a disgusting bitter taste to it and permeates whatever food is cooked with it.
I’d absolutely love kimchi if it wasnt for the disgusting cabbage……
