This looks neat but note that this emulates Game Boy, not Game Boy Advance, so it would be better suited to LSDJ than to FMS. (For me, physical buttons make an enormous difference in these experiences, too—button combinations can be difficult on touch screens.)

What would bethe cheapest (but acceptable) handheld device, that can emulate the GBA be? Looking to try it out as an interesting experiment over the summer, but I see close a gazillion different options. Which one does one choose?

Like… a game boy advance perhaps? No need to reinvent the wheel, it’s already built on a device with extremely wide availability, Nintendo sold like a billion GBAs between all the revisions and the DS Lite.

Whatever you already have… if you have a smartphone or tablet, you can connect a Bluetooth controller if you don’t want to mess with a touch screen (which is entirely reasonable). You can use a laptop and an emulator like mGBA. If you have any gaming device, worth looking into whether it can emulate GBA (you might be surprised).

After spending way too long replacing the screen on this cheap GBA with a backlit colour one, I finally have a unit ready to put a cartridge in! Was an absolute faff and don’t recommend it. I’ve built a lot of modules and synths and this was the fiddliest. You can buy pre trimmed cases etc, but the instructions and stuff out there are really not the clearest. Anyone looking at this as a diy thing, just a heads up. I’ve got an ambernic one too and that is a neat solution. I cleaned up the audio whilst I was at it too, but only have a pokemon game, so hard to tell how clean it is now, but I think we’re all set. Ergonomics of the GBA still feels great though for FMS.
I’m not sure if my Pokémon game is a fake cartridge or not and can be flashed with FMS. I think I’m going to wait till next month and see if I can grab one of fors official cartridges first before looking at the SD adaptor solutions, as I only really want to use this for FMS.

Post a picture of your pokemon cartridge. I can tell you if it’s fake.

Looks like a reproduction; wrong chips and the Nintendo logo is incorrect.
(Although I’m not an expert, just know what chips were used for production carts at this point heh)
Whether it can be flashed or not, I don’t know, but I don’t think it will work with FMS either way.

thanks! it was bundled with the console so no biggy. I had just heard somewhere that certain carts could be reflashed. I’ll wait and see if I can grab an official FMS one when they’re ready.

Hey @Ess could I please check the circuit IO labels please on the DIY link cable? Just bought one and took the casing off one end, and I’ve got four cables, but they appear to be different positions to the ones in your diagram on the manual. I’m viewing the link diagram as if looking down the barrel of the gun. Unless the other end is wired differently?!
Any clues, as to what I should wire up to the minijack? Thx!
The GBA cables are usually twisted so the other end probably has the connections you need.
Or at least to be sure, the wiring is for GBA link cables not GBC or DMG
