First gig you went to

With no shame, and likely pride I have questions.

Who did you see and what was memorable?

To kick things off, my first show I went to (no family) with friends were The Kinks in early '84.

They played everything we wanted. It was superb.

Hoping people chime in saying they saw Britney Spears on her first tour or Elvis or Johnny Cash who I did see in the 70s but that was with my Dad and I can’t remember it.

First “gig” implies that you were a performer. I think you should edit the title of the post. It is confusing.

My parents took me to musicals at the outdoor municipal opera venue when I was a little kid. And my grammar school class was bussed to the symphony hall. The first concert that I attended on my own volition was Maynard Ferguson playing at the local high school auditorium.

The Ramones, which probably makes me sound older and cooler than I actually was. It was the early 90s, I was maybe 14 and I owned Jon Bon Jovi’s Young Guns soundtrack on vinyl.

First concert I ever went to was James Taylor actually. Best friend’s mom had an extra ticket so I went with just for the heck of it.

OP is from the UK where going to a ‘gig’ means in fact just that: Watching a band or musician perform…

OT: My first concert was Iron Maiden in '95 (so with Blaze Bailey instead of Bruce)

Arthur Brown’s Kindom Come. Newbury Corn Exchange, 1973. Notable for no drummer (Arthur used a Bentley Rhythm Ace) and scenes with the entire band in costume (as things like traffic lights, and galleons, and telephones).

I was a kid when my uncle took me to Vienna to see a Pink Floyd concert in 1988, I still listen to them and am a big fan.

W.A.S.P. at the Derby Assembly Rooms (UK) December 86 or 87 can’t remember which. Warlock supported who I wanted to see but we missed because we were busy necking cheap lager. The highlight was the exploding codpieces! Great first gig. Just looked it up it was 4th Nov 1986  So I was 14, thanks Mum & Dad :innocent:

Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Morbid Angel, and Napalm Death in Edinburgh in 1989.

Fourteen years old, some punks took us past the bouncer when he said no chance, became the whole venue’s lucky mascots for the night. Sat with the bands, Shane Embury bought us a pint of cider, and we became mini human cannonballs for the crowd throwing us on stage all night.

I think I was 15 and went to Paradise Lost & Sepultura with some friends from school. Felt quite intimidating at first, as all the metal guys were twice as big than us…
