First elektron device

Hi guys, I´m still beginner, every video I see about elektron model means falling in love with it, so I don´t know what I should buy at first. I´d like to do rytms, sampling, synth, weird sounds, the more possibilities the best and being intuitive if possible, l´m looking for something versatile to complete my gear and I think at least one of them would be mandatory. I do not quite understand the differences between elektron models, looks like all of them are really, I know there are other similar topics and videos about this issues but I always find opposite opinions which don´t help me to decide about this.

Kind regards and many thanks for your time.

If you looking into sampling as you write, the only boxes that can sample from audio in (and are currently produced) are rytm, digitakt and octatrack - the model:sample can only be feed via file transfer.
I think as first box the digitakt is very rewarding. You get a good sounding sampler with a lot of possibilities.

I second the Digitakt… It was my first Elektron box and I love it. It’s accessible yet deep, and it makes samples sound fantastic.

Thanks gekkonier! To be honest I payed attention on Digitakt at first. Do you mean it´s not possible to record for example other instruments through audio in and sampling after that? just via file transfer? and what does it work as a drum machine?

You can sample through the audio ins. Honestly, I would just check out YouTube videos on the process as I think it’s easier to watch how it functions rather than having it explained in text.

Edit: There are also a ton of videos on advanced functions like using the LFOs to modulate different parameters as well as other nifty tricks and tips.

thks AlmaxMere

Look for Videos from Loopop as a starting Point.

If you care about drums, then you definitely need the Analog Rytm. Plus, it’s got “Song mode”. If you don’t know what that is, take the time to download the manual. If I had known that the Digitakt didn’t have song mode I would have gotten the Octatrack. The Analog Rytm and the Octatrack are more expensive, but I would recommend saving up until you can get 'em both.
Good luck.

Digitakt is a really good starting place. It was my first Elektron box too.
I think these were the videos that really sold it to me.

Sorry, it seems I was mistaken about song mode on the Octatrack. Someone said it did on another post and I foolishly neglected to check the manual myself. I couldn’t find any mention of song mode in the Octatrack manual, but since I have the Analog Rytm I know it does.

The song mode of the OT is called “Arranger”. It’s the most sophisticated song mode of all Elektron machines. You can even play parts of a pattern with it. It let you automate mutes, stores BPM per Arranger line etc.pp. …

I´ve read a lot about “song mode” and I still do not quite to understand what does it mean.

It provides a way to combine multiple patterns into whole songs (without changing patterns by hand).

In its simplest form its just a way to chain patterns together like play pattern A1,A2,B3,A1,B5, but it can, of course, provide much more functionality. It is called “Arranger” on the OT for a reason.

I’m very new to Elektron, but I would say Digitone+Digitatk. Or just Digitakt if sampling is very important for you, but you don’t want to spend too much money.
That said, I currently have Model:Cycles, Digitakt, Digitone and Octatrack, but it seems DN and OT are all I really need. I used Digitakt for a couple of days, but then OT arrived and grabbed all of my attention. I’m sure I’ll find ways to use DT, but DN and OT work perfectly together and are more than enough for me at the moment.

With an OT and DT side by side on my desk, I use the DT as one-shot sample player and drum machine. This frees up tracks on the OT to use with melodic and harmonic content. Powerful and immediate combo!

Hi all! I recently purchased a Model:Cycles and just waiting for it to be delivered. I’m excited to be able to join the community and can’t wait to make some crazy sounds!

Anything with samples. I would say that using samples is the 1st thing anyone should learn, you can make anything at all with samplers. You could make Death Metal or Remix the Venga bois.
