First Day CF Issues

Hi all, new member and new OT. I have a problem that I don’t even think is the OT’s fault. In a nutshell - I can only access the CF card from my PC if I start my computer with the OT in USB Disk Access mode. If at any point I come out of USB Disk Access mode, and then need to access the card again from Windows, I have to reboot my PC.

The only solution I’ve found was on a camera forum, and entailed disabling the Marvell Storage Utility. Unfortunately I can’t do this as I have drives connected to it.

This is a complete workflow killer. My plan is to create samples in my DAW and then stick them on the CF for sequencing and processing in the OT. So, if I can’t get this fixed I need to decide if recording everything into the OT is viable, and just using CF transfer when moving a lot of samples over. If not then I guess the OT is being returned.

Any help would be appreciated.

You could try reformatting your card…

Make a backup of everything on your CF card to your PC.

Disconnect the Octatrack from the PC.

Press [Function] + [Mixer]

Go to [System] press [Right]

Go to [Card Tools] press [Enter]

Go to [Format Card] press [Enter]

Yes, the situation you described is not typical. Try to reformat the card.

One day I faced with issue using my tablet pc connecting it to the desktop computer: connection was unstable and sometimes PC didn’t see sd card. The problem was in USB cable which looked great. Try to connect OT via another cable.

Also, I found that using USB3.0 CF card reader allows to copy samples to CF card much-much-much faster then using OT’s USB interface (which is 2.0 as I understand). Recommend to buy one!

Thanks, I’ve reformatted the card in Windows but not from the OT. I’ll give this a go tonight.

I’ll probably also buy a new card and a reader, although I wanted to avoid this as I didn’t fancy inserting it 100’s of times due to stuff I’ve read about the OT. I’ll do a search and find out what the highest recommended make and model of card is.

Fingers crossed!

What version of Windows are you running?

What may be happening is that you might be getting a conflict with the drive naming… all happening in the background… basically…

  1. Power up, Octatrack is named as drive “X”

  2. Disconnect Octatrack, and now your pc thinks your usb key (or whatever) is drive “X”

  3. Reconnect Octatrack, and it still thinks it is drive “X” (step 1), but it can’t be drive “X”, as your usb key is now drive “X” (step 2) so it won’t be displayed.

Hope that makes sense. You can put this back online via the “Disk Management” utility via Control Panel.

Rusty, Win 7. The OT shows up at all times as Removable Disk (G:) but isn’t mounted, IE there is no volume name, no ‘available space’ graphic and double-clicking results in an ‘Insert Disk’ message.

Win 7 here as well. That is the behaviour that would be displayed once it is recognised and your pc has registered the Octatrack as G / Removeable disk, after you have disconnected via the OT.

For me, I find that mine are only recognised if I have the laptop on, the usb plugged in and then power on the Octatrack… have you tested that scenario?

I have, but the card doesn’t mount even though the OT shows up. If I then go into USB Disk Access Mode nothing changes. If I then reboot, everything is OK.

If I turn the OT off it disappears in Windows, which I would expect. Nothing else is assigned to G:, but I’me going to try your drive letter suggestion anyway.

External drives get added as registery entry.

Anyways, see how you go, can always do a chat session if you are still stuck.

Great, cheers Rusty.

Ok, new things I’ve tried:

  1. Bought a card reader - exactly the same issue. As I suspected, this is nothing to do with the OT.
  2. Formatted the card with the OT, no difference.
  3. Tried the CF card in my girlfriend’s PC, using the new card reader, no issues.
  4. Tried a new drive letter, no difference.

Not looking good…

FIXED!

After an insane about of fiddling about, and an even insaner amount of Googling and reading, I found a version of the Marvell Storage Utility that is about 6 months newer than the one I had installed. This was tricky as my PC is almost 5 years old. I ran the installer and had completely forgotten that the OT had been in disc access mode all along. The second I clicked OK in the ‘installation complete’ dialogue box, the CF window popped up, ready to accept lots of lovely samples. I tested putting the OT in and out of the mode a few times and everything is now working as it should.

Thanks for the help, now back to the fun stuff.
