Berlin Nightmare is the first boring “Sophie” song I’ve ever heard. Since it’s posthomous, kinda doesn’t count. Still excited for the album but I’ve listened to every Sophie song/demo available on the internet and it’s kinda a shame because this could have easily been back to back masterpiece.
yeah, just listened and i gotta agree. these tracks have all sounded like drafts if anything. the same thing happened with Lil Peep’s posthumous albums. overall feels hollow
also i think Reason Why is fantastic but the old soundcloud versions sound better.
Yeah, it sounds like my worries are warranted and they’re mining old project files. I also have to say I’m not a huge fan of these visuals; they feel like blender tech demos and reductive in the sense that portraying her work exclusively in terms of physical material simulation kind of misses the point imo.
Really big shame, I’m not opposed to this stuff being out in the world if that’s what she wanted, but I’d rather see it dropped on SoundCloud or in a big .zip file on a website that people can explore for themselves. If they got creative with it the latter could be made into something that’s a much more meaningful tribute as opposed to just “more SOPHIE” by any means necessary.
At this point the big rollout feels disingenuous, I don’t get a sense that an actual album was ready here and I don’t see a reason to mess with a discography that has such a legendary quality to quantity ratio.
check out today’s Google Doodle… v. cool.
word.
I feel like Wiley’s early drumless instrumental’s chime with her “Why do drums have to sound like drums” ethos too
although that always makes me think… had Wiley heard this?
nothing new under the Sun I guess
Why do I love Dux Content, Lipgloss Twins, Sophie, Kane West… and can’t stand Charlie XCX ??? anyone?
Mines not cool at all! It has register to vote, gross!
Does XCX do her own production?
It’s AG Cook from what I understand. I guess we’re 10 or more years into PC Music, maybe the thrill iz gone.
I mean when these people crack the mainstream and do a ton of collabs, quality necessarily suffers and the envelope pushes them more than they push the envelope.
Ha. Yeah, or the envelope has been pushed, and it stops having that subversive charm it once had. A friend once described Dux Content as a CD boombox in an aromatherapy spa decided to make its own dance music, or remix itself, or something. Always found that funny.
yeah, all that. the underground gets coopted, which leads to collaborators wanting that cultural cache to blandify or the moderately famous hyper-capitalists ripping off wholesale without credit or soul-
Brilliant.
Good to see SOPHIE getting some mainstream press coverage…
Out everywhere else now too:
Hm, not on bandcamp?
Listening to the first tracks now, to me they sound much much better than the teasers we had so far
Seems not, at least perhaps not before the original official release date tomorrow… maybe?
Personally i find the first half kind of boring.
It picks up the second half though.
Exhilarate is legit a really good song, but it also feels like the furthest from SOPHIE. I would not be surprised if it went to become a mainstream hit.
Love me off earth hits that SOPHIE spot for me, especially the outro.
all in all i think i wanted more rubber plastic FM SOPHIE and not so much ensemble machine SOPHIE
Just my dog dodo opinion though
