Must be something wrong with your phone. Sounds perfectly good at my end, as usual with Mr Judd.
Yup, just tried my iPad and it sounds fine. This phone has been shuffling toward the e-waste pile for some time, it keeps getting slower and slower, but I can’t stand the thought of paying for a new one.

I am on a market for an easy field recorder - how is the Tascam frav-2? Do you still have it?
I’ve got a Tascam DR-05 that I like (for what it is). Has anyone had a chance to use the new DR-05XP?
My trusty old DR-40 wouldn’t power on no matter what the source. When holding down the power button it would make a high pitched whine sound which seemed like a really bad sign and maybe it was time to say goodbye to my old friend. I’ve been pretty bummed the last week, however…
I saw a suggestion to rock the Hold switch back and forth 5 times and voila it worked!
