Feature request: Auto-save recorder buffers to Project Folder

I recently found out that saving a project doesnt save parts, so you can’t press function+reload until you save the parts seperately.

The kind of “mistake” you probably only make once

but yes, sure, +1 for saving everything in one button combo.

It was not so bad An error message pops up saying I should save the parts first… I saved the project first but that doesn’t do the trick.

Ah ok, did not know that you get an error message ! I guess it makes sense, as it could potentially be a devastating move !

i use pickup machines a lot, and i wish there was an option in the project menu that read something like “purge recording buffers on shutdown y/n”. some projects it works out nicely that the buffers are purged, some not. most of mine - not.

is this technically possible in the software? easily? or is it built entirely differently so that would just mean coding the whole damn thing from the ground up?

i know i can save and assign the buffers from the pickup machines into flex machines, but i don’t really want that. i just want it to be EXACTLY like it was when i turned it off.

Yes, +1 to adding this command.

But here’s a little perspective. I used to do my sampling with the MDUW and was very used to the long and very bumpy workflow of “saving something wonderful” with that setup. As a result, my OT sample workflow perception is still set at, “this is so much easier”! Even if I have 8 tracks of sampling it’s only a minute or two of buttons to get it all set right.

My additional thought would be that the sample save command would auto-ignore tracks with empty recorders. Also, you might want it to stop and let you name the saved samples. Sometimes I love having the default name for the sake of workflow speed but other times I want to give that sample a more useful name.

I am a new OT user, and find the file management the worst of any equipment I have ever used - without a doubt.
(going right back to the first Roland samplers, the Fairlight, Synclavier, EPS/ASR10,Yamaha’s - even Casios and Boss foot pedals!!!)

I nearly returned my brand new OT to the shop - my jaw hit the floor when I realized the neanderthal saving processes.
Its beyond a joke.

I’m multitracking my OT to be sure/safe I don’t lose stuff.
At least if i do I can re arrange/edit on Protools to finish a project.

This really is pathetic for 2014 (or even 1990)
If they only ever do one more upgrade - this is of the utmost importance.
If this does not happen - I’m flogging mine for sure.

yeah… batch saving to any folder with maybe a wild card naming scheme a la reaper would be very welcomed. who can ever remember what R6 was that one day last month…

i think saving the recorder buffers is easy enough. my feature request is that they simply don’t have to be purged when i turn off ot / change project unless i want them to.

the reason being 1. I am a musician who improvises from a blank canvas in each performance and 2,that this is how ALL my other hardware works Electribes, Emu Command Station… Echoplex loopers…everthing I have owned alwas “forgets” what you where doing UNLESS you press save… it is just a small thing but having that extra step in the heat of setting up for a gig (with a load of other things I HAVE to pre-flight) means that I often mean to start quietly but actually manage to blow the start with the loudest most twisted version of whatever I was mangling into a climax in my last gig before shutting off. …

Options are, indeed, the way to make everyone relatively happy

In your case, I would think that it would be easy enough to set up a “starting” template, save and sync it to card, then when performing, you can do what you want, and when you’re done, just recall your template

I, for one, am really happy that Elektron kit is always in a “save” state. Helps with the flow, for me at least !

Yes, this is true.
And this is how I use this function now.
But you still need to name every sample completely instead of with some smart auto-naming scheme.
And then you still need to reload your samples into free slots (Flex or Static) if you want the recording buffers to be cleared. And then you still need to save your Part and your Project.

My request is to automate all of this based on the Project Name with one menu command.
I really don’t think further than ‘Pattern D7 was is slammer and will fit right in the Live groove I have going here’ when playing live. So having samples auto-named ‘Slammer-R1-016’ or ‘TIGHTSHIT-R7-097’ is fine for me. In fact, that would be more clear than what I name my samples now

A quicker way to save samples would be rad. Doing it manually is tedious. Have a process that automates saving. Something like [T1}+Play or Function+T1+Play for eg. The file name could just be the date and time. You could always rename the sample later. I think we’ll never see new features for the OT.

I don’t mind naming things as required - the hard part is remembering WHAT to name things esp if you’re going to sample a bunch of different drums and name them BD-001, BD-002… I forget where I am and what I"ve already saved. I wish there was a little file browser that came up when you named things to make this easier.

Again. We’ll never see these features. Perhaps Elektron will learn from these mistakes during the development of the next new thing.

It’s the most painful omission in the Octatrack for me and adding something like this would transform how it could be used. A single command ‘save all buffers to static/self’ (or even flex would be fine if that’s easier) that you could assign to a MIDI note/footswitch would be amazing.

I record intro/verse/chorus/variations as separate parts on 3/4 tracks (bass/guitar/synths) and it’s a real wrench to go from making music to file management/sample allocation every time I want to record a new part. The only way to avoid it that I’ve heard of is to use multiple tracks set to the same record buffer (to change the parts on another single track) which is an insane workaround.

To be honest even a single ‘save to self’ menu option that frees up the record buffer to use for a new part on the same channel would be a big improvement for me as it needs to be done so many times when building a track like this live.

Command for:

Save all current rec buffers to pool and load into track 1 to 8 (assign to self) after saving them into a specified folder on the CF card.

It’s so messy and tedious currently.
