I just watched a pretty good documentary on Barrett—

According to that movie, Roger Barrett renamed himself Syd after Sid “The Beat” Barrett, who was a jazz bassist in the UK. Others claim he preferred “Syd” to “Roger” because it was a more working-class, average Joe type name.

Sid Viscious, if I remember correctly, was named after John Lydon’s pet hamster.
