Screaming inside.
I’ve had an Octapad (SPD30, Roland drum pad thing) for many years and for years I’ve tried to save midi mappings as a kit so I don’t have to redo my mappings on power off / on. It made no sense to me that they wouldn’t save no matter what I tried.
Well, today I tried again. As always I got nowhere. I re-read the manual looking for bits on saving. Everywhere it says “kits are saved automatically”. There are even forum posts (I’ve searched everywhere) talking about how great it is that it saves automatically. There are some YouTube videos (in Hindi!) about saving backups to USB. Nothing on standard saving. You can backup to a USB stick so I thought maybe I have to save and backup each power off / on. But that seemed ridiculous.
So, today I reached for the factory reset in case it was a bug that could be wiped out.
Giant message:
“Write protect is on”
What? I then go into the system settings and right at the bottom of a large list there is a write protect setting with a message: “Edits will not be saved when write protect is on”. Write protect was on.
I’ve used my Octapad mostly only on stock sounds and had to re-do the midi editing every single time because for some reason years ago my copy shipped with write protect on.
Lesson learnt for me: Check global settings on all your devices in case there are weird things in there.
Lesson learnt for manufactuerers: This might be an important setting to let people know about when the machine boots up? There’s already a big info bubble when you start which says the machine will turn off after 4 hours. Surely Roland could have put a little note there or a lock in the corner or something.
Anyway. Ugh!

I today realised that I had no idea how to change from one pattern to another on my Analog Keys because I had just been doing it on the connected Digitakt, and it took me about 20 minutes to figure it out.
Just today initialized a new project on DN and made a beat without saving the project first. Byebye beat. Still managed to whip out couple of new beats after I tried to return on it. Cleared sequences few times as well.
