Hi friends, I’ve been getting into IDM as of late and getting more interested in making it. I’m wondering how essential UW is for real time glitching vs ratcheting triggers and/or glitching the master bus or a drum bus with something like OT.

Can use other machines for samples drum sounds. If I understood IDM more it would make the choice easier for me.

What would you rather have? MDUW or MD/any drum machine + OT?

I’d go MDuw, or OT & syntakt rather than OT & MD non-UW.

that’s just me tho.

OT mk2 & syntakt is what I currently have. dream combo imo.

I have an Octa + MD non UW. Its a great combo, I dont feel like i need the UW version. There are plenty of sounds on the vanilla MD that can retrigger, and all sounds can amplitude modulate on the 2nd synth page.

Me too. I prefer the Syntakt than the MD UWMK2+ I had…
Probably easier to get cold / industrial / lofi sounds with the MD though…
Much easier to create melodic stuff with Syntakt, MD is PITA to tune…

yea ST is a joy for melodic stuff

Two boxes is plenty for actually getting shit done, and for that reason I’d leave the OT out the equation and go for MDUW+ (giving you sampling without a third box), plus either ST or DN. But hey just my opinion maaan… No right answer, and depends partly on the sound you want to go for

Octatrack was directly inspired by MD RAM machines that came with UW : possibility to sequence recorders, and play their buffers in another sequence.

Octatrack is much better in that domain, and there are more lfos, and the crossfader to make things very glitchy, under control…

So I’d say MD + OT is better…
