eReaders what's your experience been like?

You don’t need to hack anything, just upload everything through Calibre.

True. But I also like to use a custom reader software! Uploading your own fonts, customizing the display of the page, typography and all that stuff. I basically have the same experience on every device that way. Makes buying a new e-reader much less desirable

You can have custom fonts on Kindle, you just need to drop correct font files in the directory. You can then adjust spacing, sizing, margins and other parameters within the Kindle OS, just as with pre-installed fonts.

Looks like my kindle died. Bit disappointing, only had it since 2010.

lol, I’ve had mine since 2011 and it’s still going strong.
I wish ebook purchasing worked like music on vinyl. Buy a physical copy and get a download code.

I got a Kobo last year and I’ve had a good experience with it.

I installed NickelMenu and KOReader which improved the default experience a bit (which was by no means bad). KOReader is really nice, very customizable, custom gestures, and a variety of minimally invasive info bar options.

The only thing I don’t really like about it is the library view. It was designed as a PDF reader initially I believe, so contributors haven’t really prioritized the library view, but I believe there is an in-progress metadata-based implementation you can test out if so inclined. But collections and history views make that mostly a moot point for me.

I agree 100%. The library view in koreader feels like it’s broken and the UI is not working correctly. However, once you start a book…

I’m a writer so I don’t buy books from Amazon. Love Kobo’s devices, but recently I started buying books from bookshop.org. If you don’t mind reading on a tablet, they have a great reading app, and they’re the only ebook retailer that lets you buy the books from your local independent bookstore (at least here in the US…not sure how much business they do elsewhere).

I’ve tried their app on the android-based Onyx Boox products but I don’t really like the experience. They’ve talked about trying to partner with Kobo or issue their own branded device, but until then the iPad app is pretty great. I do have an iPad Mini set up just for reading, with no distractions, and I enjoy the experience.
