Envelope as gate

Hello,
I am currently working on a track and want to use a drone sample being played continuously, but only occasionally heard.

I run my modular system through the ot, often using the thru machine envelope+trigs as gates for an otherwise continuous sound (frees up vcas for other duties). I was wondering if there is a way to mimic this approach using flex/static machines playing samples.

I had assumed that if I set a one shot at the beginning of the pattern, set the default hold and release to 0, and then used trigless locks to fire the envelope, then the sample would run regardless in the background, but this doesn’t seem to be the case: the sample is trigged without being heard initially, but after the first trigless envelope, the sample stops playing (seems end of hold/release also stops sample playback).

Is there a setting in pattern setup or project menu that could help me get around this? I realise the effect could probably be achieved using a neighbour machine, but I’m out of tracks!

Edit: now i cant even get the first trigless lock to register…confused

I never found a solution to this myself unfortunately. It would be fantastic if it worked.

If you don’t want to use another track you could trigless trig the filter env. It’s different though, for sure.

Edit: can we trigless trig an LFO? Can’t remember. Maybe LFO could work assigned to the amp envelope. Not in front of my OT…

Great question ! I’d like to know too !!

this should work, LFO sent to the VOL parameter

another workaround that comes to mind would be to p-lock the VOL parameter and use slide trigs, far more limited, but doesn’t use an LFO

Yeah, there are a few convoluted workarounds I guess, but just adds to the workflow and detracts from the music flow

I wonder if there will ever be another os update…

I definitely get that, but I always encourage myself to look at workarounds like this as potential places for inspiration - rather than being frustrated that I can’t walk down the path I originally wanted to, I try to embrace the new avenues that open up before me that can lead to unexpected destinations

True: if ever there was a piece of kit that exemplifies that ethos, it has to be the OT
