Endorphin.es Evil Pet

I mainly got it for its form factor, but it sounds pretty darn good to me

is it possible to use the pet without any grains? so just as a effectprocessor with reverb, filter and saturation?

Only the reverb can used without grains. The filter/saturator FX is for grain only. You can kind of get there by having a very short grain at the exact end of the buffer, but it will introduce some phasing tone to the original signal.

Eq

i really like the fact that it is not trying to do everything. But rather it focuses on a simple and straight forward workflow… ive really really wanted a knob per function sampler for a very long time… But to me it seems like developers have just focused on making sampler grooveboxes which try and do everything.

Maybe someday i will acquire it…

I finally had a bit more time with the evil pet. Here are a few impressions:

  • Design and build quality are rock solid and very inviting, i love its prophet meets cash 90s register vibes. The overall hardware feels very satisfying to use and the screen is great and useful. Only the encoder is a bit wobbly. I’ve never hit the record/play buttons accidentally like another user reported here.

  • Soundwise, I would describe it as high-fi but crunchy (compared to the Tempera and Lemondrop which are the other granular hardware I’ve used enough), especially with anti-alias off or when any filter resonance is engaged. It’s a fun crunch though, I love its tone.

  • FX wise, the reverbs are generic but ok sounding. Distortion sounds amazing. As for chorus and flanger I had crazy volume jumps when tweaking them so I’ve stopped trying to explore them for now. They didnt convince me at first but still early to say, I’d say the chorus sounds like short a metallic delay more than a lush chorus imho

  • The UI is fun and fast. Most immediate granular hardware I’ve used. It’s easy though to tweak the wrong parameters by forgetting the shift modes or forgetting to disable the LFO assign mode, but i feel its more an habit thing to build up than anything else. I wish there was a ā€œscaleā€ mode for the knobs. Right now, you have to go back to the indicator of the previous position on the scren and pass through it before you can change anything. Sometimes, you even have to do it when you are still at the right position on that knob. And this indicator is not displayed for every parameters, which makes it a bit inconsistent.

It feels like a beta firmware however. MIDI notes get stuck all the time so its a bit limited as a synth as it is unless you are droning one note. The volume parameters (which is used for headphones) jumps back to maximum when you load another patch or clear the patch, which blew my ears twice on top of the FX doing the same. Hopefully this will get fixed soon.
