I was thinking of getting the Evil Pet but I would definitely use it with a looper and/or a complimentary synth module if I wanted to make “full song” sounds.
Luckily it is compact and affordable enough for this idea to make perfect sense, for me.

I’ve certainly been wrong about many pieces of gear before and am a bit shocked how quickly I jumped on the Evil Pet…right or wrong, I felt I’ve been hearing things that don’t always sound as typical as a lot of the other granular boxes I’ve heard and that intrigued me. Seems feature rich for the price too and Endorphin.es have an awfully good track record. I’m a little surprised I bought it because at one time I was way more excited about granular than I am now. Was on the waiting list for the first Tasty Chips GR-1 (?) as well as the S-4 years later, but backed out both times. Most demos on those boxes (and some others) start out with something like “Here’s a piano loop. Now I’m going to make it sound as much not like a piano as possible and from there we’ll keep tweaking it for 20 minutes until it sounds like nearly every other granular patch you’ve ever heard.” I’m hoping I can find something different in this pedal. Time will tell
Yeah, I jumped to that in the manual and it got my hopes up a bit, but it seems like it’s not really designed with this in mind like a lot of other pedals that have an instrument/line setting. My feeling is that it’ll probably be fine, but gonna have to wait and see.
I think it’s more a thing that the people who can’t get on with the encoders have been unlucky or just want something different from their devices. And a couple of them have been really loud about it.
Seems like a very different device to this one - where the S-4 is a performance instrument / loop station at its core, this is coming off like a cross between a desktop synth and a guitar pedal. Which does have me wondering why they didn’t put foot switches on there, doesn’t seem like there’s a good reason not to. Or maybe I’m just thinking this because I already have an S-4 and want an excuse to get this as well, looks like a lot of fun.
Agreed and that’s what I kinda like about it on paper. Mine won’t arrive for a few days. The fact that it doesn’t have foot switches is fine for me as well (preferable in fact) because I mount all my live electronic gear on a large pedalboard, but the pedalboard is up on a table. Side note; This means practically nothing to me because I’m not as fussy about certain things as other folks can be, BUT I think this thing looks badass. I got no particular jones for pink, but I like this shade of pink on this box. I also love the look of the switches. Oddly, I also love that it can’t seem to decide if it’s a synth that looks like a pedal or a pedal that looks like a synth. I see it as a piece that can be reconfigured, moved around and used for different purposes in my chain. Cautiously optimistic over here ![]()
EDIT- For the couple people here who own S-4’s and are happy about it, I wouldn’t think this box (or thread for that matter) would be of any interest, nor should it be. I’d be very interested if someone finds a good reason to have both and why
I think your rationale sounds good. One reason I have been eyeballing this is that it does not try to do everything but offers hands-on control for the most important parameters.
I feel that if I bought Tempera or S-4, I would focus on them too much as they’re so capable, which would then turn my current productive and usable workflow upside down. And probably make whole songs sound granular, which is totally not what I want.
So I view it basically as a very playable pedal!
I must agree with some who said that it does not seem to sound as good as some other products. Might just be what they put in and not its inherent sound. It’s fine for me, but just saying that I heard it too (only watched loopop vid so far).
I really hadn’t thought about it this way, but that was very well put and I think jives with my reasoning.
No option to private message you, maybe you haven’t been registered long enough.
Are you still posting YouTube videos? I’d love to check out your new purchases. Are you still doing beat battles?
wanted him for the producer profiles thread but couldn’t find any of those wonderful clips he use to have up!
Technically no, there is no granular machine. Can you fake it with a combination of ratchets which modulate the start point, speed, and pitch of tiny snippets which you pour into a soothing dark reverb? Yes definitely. Should you buy an Octatrack to find out what this sounds like?
Good point - although I really like the fact it has only one track- if the Evil Pet had more tracks (3-4) I would have preferred having it with separate outputs so that they can be mixed externally in an analog mixer
I’ve got to be careful what I say here (because, who am I?) but you’ve touched on something that makes me feel quite uncomfortable.
There seems to be a prevailing thought on this forum, and I guess the wider community, that the notion of 30 day returns on gear is just a facility that should be exploited without any thought given to economic or environmental concerns.
I was a little shocked at first to read so many comments from people for who it is the absolute norm to ‘buy’ a product with a mind from the outset of just giving it a try and if not a good fit then shipping it back.
I expect that kind of mindset from people who’d buy every single thing they need from Amazon rather than walk 50 yards to support a local business, but I had some naive notion that electronic music people might be a little more conscious than that.
It seems not.
One, there’s the carbon footprint of such practices, but also there’s the economic impact on boutique and independent manufactures and retailers.
People are quick to lament the closing down of music retailers or small manufacturers, but if you rent their gear for 4 weeks and then send it back to be b stock without thought then you’re a direct contributor to their pressures.
Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe the net gain is positive.
It never feels like it to me.
Granulator 2 I’d guess. Which is free. Software is pretty insane though with granular. A ton of options.
no i deleted my youtube channel. it was a joke thing between me and my God daughter. lol we had a chase to 1k sub or something many moons ago. I started another that will be something i actually use, still not care about but will use lol.
I use Arturia Fragments quite a bit, but typically with some crazy ass settings then turn it down until it’s just barely audible. One of my favorite things about granular is making random little spitty particles that jump around to provide subtle stereo interest, if that makes any sense.
Was gonna say the Arturia one, usually end up getting something usable out of it. Kentaro Simplos is my go-to, just got a 2.0 update which I haven’t really dug into, but the first one is great and pretty wild. I mainly use the max device but it has plugins too.
On iOS I’ve tried Borderlands but it hasn’t really stuck yet. Ridgewalk looks really nice but I haven’t tried it yet.
yes definitely.
and that Ren & Stimy bit is super relevant as i recently pushed a button in my own life
to keep it topical: could whoever gets theirs first do some Evil Pet to that clip and holler back plz? thx
I saw the Loopop review. I like it! Well, not really sure about the Barbieworld color, hopefully some alternative pastel colors are on the table, but it looks like a really fun machine to play around with. Price is reasonable too. I can do a bit of granular with the Torso already, but I really hope they’ll increase Mosaic’s possibilities as it’s the main reason I bought it.
Played with one today at perfect circuit. It’s cool and fun! I never like radio as much as I want to because the signal is always atrocious, but maybe I’ve never had a good enough antenna or just do it wrong on every device I have. Because the radio sampling really is super cool in theory!
Yeah and due to copyright strikes, no one on YouTube has been able to show us how well it’ll pickup radio. Was never a priority to me but, it would be fun
