I am undecided between these two grooveboxes, I like that the MC is fm and the MC-101 I like its versatility. Can you advise me? I especially want it as a drum machine.
I started with the cycles and then got the mc-101.
It really depends what sounds you like. Personally I use the cycles kick all the time but with the snare and hihats (metal) I’m glad to have the roland x0x samples to layer or substitute.
For me I love the cycles sounds and I find it very easy and intuitive to write with. So my work flow for the mc-101 tends to be with supporting sounds, especially poly synths.
I love having the cycles looping, having a midi synth line on the mc-101 and then auditioning sounds using the random function. When a sound really gels it is instantly noticeable.
Not sure if that helps you but I’m glad I got the cycles first. If one had to go it’d be the mc-101 I think

Basically what ZAC said, the mc101 will always be far ahead of the cycles with melodic lines and more traditional sounds (drums, synths) and wide ranging of sounds on hand. But what the cycles can do it does amazing and its more fun to jam and mangle up jams on. Definitely a great compliment since theres almost no sound overlap. The kick on Cycles is amazing.

Hell yes. The snare not so much (very few sweet spots for my taste). But that kick is fantastic and can easily be turned into a kick/bass hybrid with long decay settings, being played chromatically.

Hope you have better luck getting a Typhon than I did. I came across a very reasonably priced novation circuit mono station last night and bought that to tide me over 
The roland mc-101 is discarded and now the 1010 music blackbox comes into play and if they lower the price on black friday the sinthstrom deluge, although I think that the model cycles and the dreambox thypon are more fun.
Problem with Blackbox (for me) was only 16 samples in memory at a time, you can use slices though and samples can be very long, it was a while back since I used BB though so firmware might have been updated since then.
Deluge is really great, in comparison to MC-101 it wins on track count and sampling, but loses on sound quality, ease of use and realtime control.
You might want to consider MC-707 too.

It is so versatile and sounds so clean.
The Deluge is dope but dont hope for a black friday discount.
I have the feeling that the Deluge will be relevant for years to come and that the biggest updates are yet to come.
