i’ve started a machinedrum app some time ago, needs some cleanup/reconsideration but then it should be good to go.
gotta say that the AF is a lot more robust than the MD when it comes to handling certain sysex tricks due to better programming & modern hardware. it also has that built-in USB-MIDI interface, so AF is the most hassle-free to use, plus it will get that bigger sibling soon. so it’s definitely AF/AK first.
don’t have a MnM/OT, would be nice if an AF app would generate enough $$$ to pay for at least one of them.
but yeah, an app which can support all of them in some way or the other would be cool. lot of work tho :]
Anyone get the iPad Air? My iPad 2 has a shattered screen and I might just sell it rather than fix it and use that to subsidize my purchase of the new one.
Supposedly, there was an overhaul of the audio DSP engine in the iPad, improving the quality of audio I/O and reducing latency. This could be the evolution of the iPad gearing up for the long-rumored (and patented design for) the 13 inch iPad- which would likely have serious specs and thunderbolt ports (and allow the iPad to run multi-touch version of Logic Pro/Final Cut Pro- whole also allowing traditional mouse and keyboard control along with MIDI, Audio Interface connectivity and multiple displays via thunderbolt 2 ports) and make pro audio and video a big marketing target.
For now, still being stuck stuck with the Camera Connection Kit or iRig for MIDI (or, 3 month old preorder on the iConnect MIDI 4 which didn’t make it out for the holidays…which is a bad sign- anyone use the iConnectMIDI 2+?) is a hassle, but I’ve been meaning to get the iPad involved in my productions again and was wondering if anyone can say if there is actual improved audio performance.
not heard of any DSP improvements like that (not sure, may be that higher bitrates/samplerates are supported now via internal audio interface)… faster CPU is always good for DSP-heavy stuff though.
also unlikely that a bigger ipad will come out, imo… thunderbolt unlikely too… they kinda recently invested into that lightning port which i guess we’ll be comforted with for a while… thnk we’ll rather see a faster version of that on future iOS devices.
and Logic etc. are completely written for desktop… wouldn’t get my hopes up personally, Apple is clearly targeting a mass market with iOS and aiming at mass + prosumer + pro with OSX.
It very much depends on app. If app solves my problem effectively, of course, I buy it and feel ok if it is priced well above the regular app price levels. However I find that mobile apps so far trend to be limited to some single functionality and therefore do not solve anything in whole when it comes to live music - you can do what you need only using several apps together or sequentially each with its own settings, storage and so on. Not regarding only Elektron I have elaborated universal midi sequencing/control station app concept, but since I can’t code for ios this still locked at concept level - just layouts and description. If someone Elektron or other developer brings to market something like this, I’d but that immediately, but I’m pretty sure that chances are nill unless I find someone to whom I’m able to cooperate in developing something like that.
I want to love iPad music making apps but in the end i always feel a little disappointed. Especially when i try to integrate the iPad with my hardware. i use the irig midi and it’s flimsy at the connection point. I don’t trust it. I’m torn because I feel there is a lot of potential in the iPad but there needs to be a better way to integrate it with hardware. That being said I’ll wouldn’t pay more than $20 for an app that requires a midi connection.
^This is what I do as well, and it works great. I sequence Animoog from the Monomachine, no issues at all. I think a lot of the current products made specifically for the iPad are a bit weak or are all missing some core feature or another, but if you get the CCK and a powered hub, you can pretty easily customize things to work for your needs.

yeah I was trying to hold out for the 4+ mainly for it’s USB hosting but in the end I had to jump with the 2 +. (Glad I did as the delivery date for the 4+ keeps getting pushed back month on month.)
The midi routing and filtering, with recallable set-ups via the iconfig app, is just what I was looking for. very cool having the audio from the apps right there in ableton too with the pass thru technology.
Only thing I had trouble with was occasional connection drop outs when used in conjunction with my ultralite but I’m pretty sure that’s to do with aggregate devices on a relatively old OS (10.6.8).
I also like how they’ve created an option to send the audio out through the headphone socket on the ipad even with it connected to the 2+ via the dock connector. Makes it possible to use the midi side of things at the same time as being able to sample into the OT without a PC .
The online support is excellent too.
I have the official Camera kit for the pervious wider connector but heard that the smaller (new) connector isnt yet compatable with the iPad Air yet ???
I always I ended my ipad to be something I could use when on a bus or train that would some how be able to integrate into my music making at home. But to this day after years of owning one…I have a bunch of junk noodles of various apps still sitting somewhere in the ipad that have not once been integrated into my real music. Ielectribe and rebirth has come close.
I would however love a machinedrum version of ielectribe. Doesn’t need to sound as good, but if it included emulations of the non uw machines, and patterns were exportable to real machinedrum I think I would definitely have a use for that.
I think functionally though ipad makes a far better midi tool than an instrument. I use my mbase touchosc editor every session now, to the point I hardly even bother saving preset kick drums…similarly for access virus editor.
