Electronic Open Mic Nights

i created an EP from my EMOM Frankfurt Live Set. Tracks produced and performed on the Digitakt 2. Some Performances Effects were based on some eurorack modules and finally the master has been done (afterwards) in a daw

Just got email that the EMOM email list (described above, scroll up to May) now has a new website!

https://electronicmusicopenmic.com

Discourse informs me that the link has been posted before, and indeed it is in the first reply to the topic header post, but it sounds as if itā€™s been revamped.

It has definitely been revamped, nothing like the old one.

Played Leicester EMOM for the first time in a couple of years last night.

Was a decent lineup, some really good stuff and a few elektrons being used here and there.

I did a shorter (10 minutes) set cos scheduling, it went down really well, but there were 3 or 4 really good acts that stood out well above the rest of us.

Encouraging signs, as Iā€™d sort of given up on Leicester, but the music is there, just need to find a bloody crowd now. Crowd got real thin towards the end, as a lot of people playing just fucked off after they finished, which is a shame, some of the best stuff was towards the end of the night.

Thatā€™s when you know youā€™re winning, when people are there as punters, not just waiting to play.

Iā€™d be interested to get more off-the-grid/clock improv practice around the Seattle area, can rent smaller performance spaces nearby.

Cameras werenā€™t on the md for this one last week. So hereā€™s a glitchy mixer levels shot for twenty minutes.

Derby (UK) EMOM tomorrow - often loads of Electrons - anyone going?

Last Derby (UK) EMOM of the year, next Thursday (19th December) - any Elektronauts going? You should, because its always awesome.

I will be playing at the Chelmsford Hotbox EMOM this Wednesday 15th.

Anyone else likely to be there?

would love to hear some advice from frequent EMOM attendees

a new artists venue opened up near my apartment and i reached out to them to pitch an EMOM night. one of their people is interested enough to continue the conversation.

i am hoping this venue has their own PA system, iā€™d assume they do but its ran by an arts collective and i dont know exactly what kind of equipment they have at this point.

what brings you to an event? what else should i be looking for? what kind of amenities help bring more participants in the door? how should i go about advertising this kind of night? if they want money, how can i convince them otherwise?

iā€™m pretty sure they dont serve drinks but there are plenty of bars surrounding the venue, i feel like thats really the only potential thing missing from the venue.

Phone recording of me making an empty room in Leicester slightly more empty.

Hard for a phone mic to do it justice really, but you get the gistā€¦

Where I live, there are two EMOM events that Iā€™ve regularly gone to, one in Nottingham, the other in Derby.

My guess is that the Derby one gets to use their venue for free, presumably because the venue make some money on food and drinks from it.

The Nottingham one I think has had to pay for at least some of the costs of the night, including payment for a sound engineer, and hence theyā€™ve had to ask for donations to cover these costs. The people running it have worked really hard, but I think it might have been hard for them to get donations in to cover their costs. As a comparator, pubs with more traditional open mic nights donā€™t tend to charge, so I suspect its hard to pull of an EMOM that charges.

So, if you can find any way to get the venue for free, so that you donā€™t have to charge, then that might be the path of least resistance.

In terms of the equipment, making sure you have some kind of volume limiting system set up is going to be crucial, people come with all kinds of equipment, putting out all kinds of different levels. Not fun being in an audience and having your hearing put at risk when something goes wrong, and a big rig suddenly puts out very high volume. Has happened a few times at other events Iā€™ve been to (not the two above, which have excellent audio setups).

Also if thereā€™s a facility for projection of visuals, that can really add to the night.

Nice one, was that a max patch? the audio reactive lighting didnā€™t know wtf was going on!

awesome information, thank you very much!

i have a bit of live audio experience from college so at least to begin with i would be offering my time to engineer along with the general organization of the night. hoping to put a call out to the local community for other volunteers who may be more skilled/have more resources.

theres a local synth shop that iā€™m thinking about approaching for some level of sponsorship, as well as a modular group that puts on a monthly free show in town. seems like a good opportunity to make some connections.

and big thank you for the limiting suggestion, that is huge. maybe this will be my excuse to get myself a legit mixer for live use. and maybe an excuse to get myself an EYESY for visuals lol

Yeah, mostly a very basic and broken FM patch through some distortion.
