Electribe ER-1 Strategy

Picked up a dirt-cheap ER-1 the other day and have been trying to create a MIDI setup for it with the OT.

I can change parameters with the 99/98/06 NRPN combo but it seems if you try to setup more than one parameter control (in the CC setup on the OT) there is some ‘clashing’ of data and only one parameter at a time seems to get transmitted (or more likely received).

Anyone had any success or have any tips for getting the most of of this combo?

I’ve been wondering the same thing, Neil. I tried parameter locking different NRPN values to different trigs with variable results, but I unfortunately never felt like I was fully in command with this combo.
The ER-1 is the first instrument I’ve used that utilizes NRPN specifications, so this has had me stumped for a while. It pairs nicely with the OT with regards to sound and style (it syncs wonderfully too), but I feel like I haven’t unlocked its full potential like I have with other instruments that use CC numbers easily accessed by the OT.
Love the Look Around You avatar btw!

The 99/98/06 message is saying ‘set this encoder to this value’ as the ER-1 doesn’t have voice parameters mapped to individual MIDI CC numbers, instead relying on NRPN data entry messages.

The OT isn’t designed to transmit them (but then not many MIDI synths are): it takes a little more handling than just broadcasting 3 different CC values simultaneously - for starters the order is important. It’s likely the CC implementation on the OT corrupts the integrity of these types of NRPN messages.

It seems to work fine with one parameter on one voice, for example, set MIDI CC 5=99, CC 6=98 and CC7=6 will let you control any single parameter OK. I’ve not yet tried to setup two OT MIDI tracks controlling two ER-1 parameters. It certainly doesn’t work controlling more than one ER-1 parameter on the same OT MIDI track.

You also need the ‘extended’ MIDI implementation list for the ER-1 as it doesn’t come in the normal user manual. Because of the voice architecture, each voice has it’s own set of unique numbers for CC 98, even though all the ER-1 voices are controlled via a single MIDI channel.

I hesitate to say, another one for the OT wish list: proper NRPN control.

(Oh and well spotted on the avatar: I have, in the past, had people ask what synth am I playing in my photo! :joy: )

Hello Neil !

I’m very curious about controlling the parameters of my ER-1 with my OT, even if it’s limited. I tried your NRPN combo 99,98,06 but it doesn’t seem to work. Do you have any advice ? Thanks a lot !

Hello I’m still need some help on this, thanks !

same issues here on digitakt. not poossible to have several commands at once mapped. new tips? anybody succeeded?

I could send NRPN to Micromonsta, it works.
Don’t forget OT don’t send same consecutive values twice. Don’t know about DT.

I am trying to control parameters such as voice tone or modulation on er1 from the Digitakt with no luck. I set the Digi to received nrpn but isnt working…any clue?

The ER-1 (pretty sure the mk 2 also) only responds to one external cc controller at a time via nrpn; likewise the internal motion seuqncer.

This is all great advice.
Love my er1 v1 - love the ringmod inputs and I have a broken pitch knob that wants ext control.
