Effects plugins to replace pedals

Yeah, either Tupe or Vulf Compressor by the same company. It’s definitely not 1:1 as Boum but similar concepts. Vulf Compressor is modeled more after the Boss SP-303 compressor but it has much more controls.

I do miss my Boum from time to time but I pull these two plugins up and use them and remember how much more convenient they are (and sound very good).

Not relevant to your initial question but GHz also makes the Lossy plugin which is now a pedal by Chase Bliss and I honestly don’t know why people will spend 8 times the price for a piece of hardware that a plugin does… but besides that point Lossy is also very great for a more specific kind of lofi texture that’s reminiscent of compressed LimeWare shared MP3 files .

Awesome, I’ll look into both of those and see if either of them work for me, perhaps first as trial versions if possible. I also wonder if GHz does Black Friday deals? If so I might wait until then to make a decision.

I get what you’re saying but I’m one of those people, I own the Lossy pedal! I actually think that one makes sense in pedal form since it’s fairly performable. I find a lot of interesting results just by moving the knobs and flipping switches to the rhythm of whatever signal it’s receiving. For reference:

but I suppose I could use a midi controller with the plugin version and emulate the experience. It’s something I’ve thought about before…

i believe they do! i bought a bunch of Ghz plugins at a discount last year.

Regarding the BOUM, i don’t think there’s a plugin that does everything it does.
its both saturation/drive, an (analog!) compressor, and a nice filter.
you can probably approach it very well with 3 plugins haha.
but i also perform on my boum (mainly the filter and drive)

I’ve sold many pedals this year (mainly the digital ones) but I don’t think I’ll ever part with BOUM

As far as Black Friday, yes they do. Every year. I believe they do two sales every year, one around their founding date and one at Black Friday. Definitely hold off. They also do the same “the more you buy the more you save” model. So you save money plus if you get three or more you’ll save overall on the price.

Over the last week I messed around with Beam by Lunacy Audio, which provides the same type of sound manipulation as Microcosm. Got some really cool effect using it on pads, stabs, percs, and hats. Good way to spice up a track.
Also Shaper Box 3 provides a whole lot of different functionality. It’s almost like a Swiss Army Knife, as it provides all kinds of options, from simple rhythmic side compression, to over the top glitching and chaotic stuff. Just wish they allowed you to use more than one of the same efx. Cableguys does a lot of really informative stuff on YouTube, which i recommend checking out. Their shorts videos are nice because they’re quick and to the point.

I used Unfiltered Audio LO-FI-AF for that and it’s absolutely glorious. It does loads more but I do love me some sweet RealPlayer nostalgia

Never used that one, it looks nice. But Digitalis by AberantDSP is another similar one that’s pretty cool and it has a built in step sequencer as well.

And they have their ShapeShifter compressor which is another very flavorful compressor @topo_explo might want to check out as a potential Boum replacement (though not 1:1).

And of course they have SketchCassette which is a real good cassette emulation.

Air Windows also makes a free cassette called ToTape7 which recently White Sea Studio said might be the best plugin to emulate tape.

Aberrant DSP also makes Lair, which is an awesome reverb, as close to a pedal as it gets. The only reason I’m not using it more is that it overloads my CPU easily, but so does almost every non-stock plugin, so it’s not the Lair’s fault.

One day I’ll rebuild it in Bitwig, I swear.

A lot of what Chroma Console does can be attained with RC-20 by XLN Audio. It goes on sale for Black Friday. Definitely hold off on buying plugins until then.

@OldmanChompski: RC20 can only recreate the lofi effects of CC as far as I can tell. It can most likely do these a lot better than CC, as this section is its weakest part. Maybe things from the compression/drive section can also be replicated to a point. But it will certainly not give you the delays, tremolos etc.

Is there anything that responds to how loudly loud the signal is, like chase bliss onward, where it doesn’t respond to quite signals, but as soon as you go over the threshold the delay/granular kicks in?

Can’t you just put a Gate in front of the signal and adjust the threshold? This would work for any FX.
